Balanced Flames cruise to victory over Senators

Andrew Mangiapane, Garnet Hathaway and Matthew Tkachuk each had a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames beat the Ottawa Senators 5-1 Thursday.

Mark Giordano scored Calgary’s league-leading 18th short-handed goal, Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames, and Derek Ryan assisted on two goals.

At Nashville, Tenn., Sidney Crosby scored the decisive shootout goal to back Matt Murray, who had 27 saves, as Pittsburgh halted a threegame skid and tied the New York Islanders for second in the Metro. Nashville had won three in a row.

At Dallas, defensemen Erik Johnson and Tyson Barrie scored to back Philipp Grubauer, who made 23 of his season-high 44 saves in the third period, as Colorado won its third straight and passed Minnesota for eighth in the West.

Atlos Angeles, Anze Kopitar assisted on defenseman Matt Roy’s first NHL goal to tie the score at 9:28 of the third period and put Los Angeles ahead to stay with a goal 2:17 later. San Jose lost its fourth straight.

At Sunrise, Fla., Aleksander Barkov had two goals and Jonathan Huberdeau three assists in support of Roberto Luongo, who had 32 saves while halting a personal five-game slide. Arizona lost its third straight. At Edmonton, Alberta, Connor Mcdavid had a goal and an assist and Leon Draisaitl three assists as Columbus lost its third straight and fell one point behind Montreal for the East’s second wild card.

At Raleigh, N.C., Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists for Tampa Bay, which scored four unanswered goals in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit and win its seventh straight.

Atnewark, N.J., Patrice Bergeron scored twice to reach 30 goals for the fifth time, backing Tuukka Rask, who had 22 saves, as Boston improved to 16-3-1 in its past 20 games.

At Chicago, Sean Couturier assisted on James van Reimsdyk’s go-ahead goal 9:50 into the third period and scored an empty-netter to back rookie Carter Hart, who stopped 40 shots.

At Montreal, Carey Price stopped 27 shots in his 44th shutout and fourth this season, and Joel Armia, Jonathan Drouin and Jordan Weal each had a goal and an assist.

St. Louis, Ivan Barbashev notched his first NHL hat trick to back rookie Jordan Binnington, who stopped 20 shots while improving to 19-4-1.
