Panthers strike late, edge Caps

Teams pay homage to shooting victims

SUNRISE, Fla. — Vincent Trocheck scored the winning goal with 19.1 seconds left to lift the Florida Panthers over the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Thursday, hours after victims of last week’s shooting at nearby Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were honored with a somber video tribute.

With the score tied at 2, Trocheck redirected a shot by Jonathan Huberdeau past goaltender Braden Holtby during a power play.

Nick Bjugstad scored the tying goal for the Panthers late in the third period, and Maxim Mamin got his first NHL goal. Roberto Luongo made 33 saves in his third game since returning from a groin injury.

Andre Burakovsky had a goal and an assist, and Lars Eller also scored for the Capitals. Holtby stopped 30 shots but lost his fifth straight.

At Ottawa, Ontario, league-leading scorer Nikita Kucherov had two assists to reach 80 points as Tampa Bay leapfrogge­d the Golden Knights to regain the top spot in the overall NHL standings.

At Newark, N.J., Joel Eriksson Ek and Chris Stewart scored in a 39-second span during Minnesota’s three-goal second period, backing Alex Stalock, who had 38 saves, as the Wild overcame a 2-0 deficit.

At Toronto, Auston Matthews scored the tying goal for Toronto with 3:29 left in regulation before leaving, favoring his right side, and Tyler Bozak scored the shootout winner.

At Montreal, Antti Niemi made 31 saves in place of Carey Price (concussion), who is out indefinite­ly, as Montreal ended its six-game slide and dealt New York its fifth straight loss. At Detroit, Marco Scandella scored with one second left in overtime, after Justin Abdelkader scored to pull Detroit into a 2-all tie with 1:25 to go in the third period.

At Glendale, Ariz., Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and two assists to back Jon Gillies, who rebounded from a first-minute goal to make 35 saves in his first NHL start of the season.

At Los Angeles, Tyler Seguin scored his

30th goal of the season with 8:27 left to break a scoreless tie and back Kari Lehtonen, who had 18 saves, as Los Angeles’ three-game win streak ended.

At Philadelph­ia, Claude Giroux had a goal and an assist to back Petr Mrazek, who had 19 saves in his Philadelph­ia debut, as the Flyers won their fourth straight.

At Nashville, Tenn., Nick Bonino, Ryan Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson each had a goal and an assist, and Pekka Rinne stopped 33 shots in his 300th victory.

At Edmonton, Alberta, Connor Mcdavid scored at 2:19 of overtime and had an assist, and Leon Draisaitl had a goal and set up Mcdavid’s winner.
