Colorado oil company plans Permian Basin push

- By Sergio Chapa STAFF WRITER

Colorado oil company QEP Resources is breaking a sixmonth hiatus as it plans to make a return to the Permian Basin of West Texas.

The company is seeking permits from the Railroad Commission of Texas to develop 14 new horizontal wells on state-owned lands in Andrews County.

Located off State Highway 176, the wells target the Spraberry field at depths ranging from 9,100 to 9,950 feet.

QEP began drilling the Permian in 2010 and now holds nearly 80,000 acres of oil leases in Andrews and Martin counties.

The company filed for 70 drilling permits in 2019 and has filed for 29 so far this year.

Like other drillers in the region, QEP scaled back drilling because of the industry downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The 14 permits filed over the past week mark the first batch since late January.
