Tomball Memorial is coming off its first-ever playoff victory in school history against Vista Ridge.

The Wildcats led at halftime of their Class 6A Division II arearound game against Westfield, but the Mustangs put up 29 unanswered points in the third quarter on the way to a 36-26 win Friday at Sheldon ISD Panther Stadium. It was the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Westfield (11-1, 7-0) needed 47 seconds to take the lead after Tomball Memorial took six minutes off the clock with 15 plays to start the game. Ashton Callaway scored on a 91-yard pass from Cardell Williams with 5:02 left in the opening quarter.

Tomball Memorial (10-2, 7-1) settled for a 20-yard field goal from Bryce Hinze to cap its second long drive four minutes later.

“They’re a well-coached team, got some really good players,” Westfield coach Matt Meekins said. “We do as well.”

After both teams fumbled the ball, a safety on fourth down cut the Wildcats deficit to 7-5 when the ball sailed out of bounds on the punt attempt.

John Boehning’s 16-yard catch made it first-and-goal with less a minute before halftime. Colton Marwill capped a 13-play, 87-yard drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak to give Tomball Memorial a 12-7 lead with 31 seconds left. “We didn’t really tell them anything,” Meekins said. “I know the defensive coach was getting after the defensive line. …We’re not going to dwell on the past. We’re going to be focused on the future.”

Westfield regained the lead on

Kendal Taylor’s 10-yard run that followed Jalen Francis’ 30-yard catch to set up first-and-goal. Francis’ two-point conversion catch on a pass from Williams made it 15-12.

Followings a punt, Jones’ 29yard catch and Williams’ run put the offense inside the 10. Taylor capped the drive with an 8-yard run on the 10th play of the drive thanks to a block by Williams to make it 22-12 with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

Ashton Harris’ 45-yard interception return for a touchdown on the ensuing drive made it 2912.

Tucker’s long run set up his 12yard TD run which made it 36-12 late in the third quarter. The Mustangs had 240 yards of offense in the third quarter after being held to 146 in the first half. Tucker and Taylor both rushed for just over 100 yards.

“Both teams made some mistakes,” Meekins said. “I felt like we made more mistakes than them. Any time you can come out with a victory and move on, it’s good.”

Following a fumble, Logan Kyle’s 30-yard reception had the Wildcats inside the red zone, and Reed Baumann’s 3-yard run made it 36-19. Kyle had 10 catches for over 100 yards.

Baumann’s 4-yard run made it 36-26 with 3:02 left in the game.

Westfield advances to the regional round for the fourth time under Meekins and will face Midway in the regional round at a time, date and site to be determined.
