JOAN SUSAN KEHRER RODEN

-

1935-2018

Roden, Joan Susan Kehrer, 83, of Houston, Texas, after a relatively recent severe illness, died peacefully in the early morning hours of December 9, 2018 of respiratory failure in the company of her devoted husband and two loving daughters. Born in Winonna, Minnesota on July 15, 1935 Joan grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, raised her family in Columbus Ohio, and resided in Houston Texas for her last 30 years. Joan was a graduate of St. Catherine’s College Nursing School in St. Paul Minnesota where she made so many life-long friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Armella and George Kehrer. Joan leaves behind her husband of 33 years, Robert A. Roden (Bob), of Houston, Texas and her 5 children: Charles P. Kielkopf of Shawnee Hills, Ohio, Judith L. Barry of Chepachet, Rhode Island, Mark S. Kielkopf of Columbus, Ohio, Susan E. Edwards of Fresno, California and Andrew J. Kielkopf of Columbus, Ohio. She also leaves her much loved grandchildren, Anthony D. Amicone, Monique N. Kielkopf, Christopher C. Kielkopf, Mathew S. Kielkopf and Jonathan T. Kielkopf. Joan was profoundly shaped by her nursing training and carried over the skill of taking care of others throughout her life - be it as the president of the local PTA or championing causes for social justice. She was ahead of her time in so many things and was an amazing mother who taught her children all things were possible. A true renaissance woman on a budget, she was a pianist, a super cook, and an artist in many mediums as well as an extraordinary seamstress. She passed her many talents to her children one of whom became an accomplished nurse while another was a sought-after wedding designer and another is very talented and innovative chef. When she moved to Houston to be with her husband Bob, Joan continued to engage her many diverse talents and her love of the artistic by managing the gift shop at the Houston Museum of Art and growing all sorts of greenery in her house and garden. She will be sorely missed by her loving family and everyone who had the good fortune to know her. A Memorial Ceremony is planned for a future date. Please sign the guestbook.
