No. 1 Villanova holds off Marquette

MILWAUKEE — Jalen Brunson scored 31 points despite leaving the game briefly with a left ankle injury, Donte DiVincenzo added 23, and top-ranked Villanova avoided another upset in Milwaukee with an 85-82 win Sunday over Marquette.

The Wildcats turned away surge after surge from Marquette to survive in front of a rowdy crowd at the Bradley Center. It was a year ago that Marquette upset a then-No. 1 Villanova team in another down-to-the-wire thriller.

Isaac Haas matched his career high with 26 points, Vincent Edwards added 19, and the No. 3 Boilermake­rs held off the Hoosiers in Bloomingto­n, Ind., for their school-record 17th consecutiv­e victory.

MICHIGAN ST. 74, MARYLAND 68

Joshua Langford scored 19 points and led a second-half surge that carried the No. 6 Spartans past the Terrapins in College Park, Md., giving Michigan State coach Tom Izzo his seventh straight 20-win season.

Austin Reaves hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and scored all of his career-high 23 points before halftime to lead the 17th-ranked Shockers over the Golden Hurricane in Wichita, Kan.

Gabe DeVoe scored a careerhigh 25 points, Marcquise Reed hit a decisive layup in the closing seconds, and the No. 18 Tigers held off the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.

SMU 86, EAST CAROLINA 61

Jimmy Whitt scored a careerhigh 20 points, Jahmal McMurray made four 3-pointers and also scored 20, and the Mustangs beat the Pirates in Dallas to improve to 15-7 and 5-4 in the American Athletic Conference.
