JOHN EUGENE (GENE) MARIK

Gene Marik died Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home in East Bernard, Texas. He was born July 15, 1928 to John I. and Josephine Spacek Marik in East Bernard. Msgr. Kunc baptized him in the Holy Cross Catholic Church across the street from his home.

Gene attended Holy Cross School, East Bernard High School, and graduated from Saint Edward’s Military Academy in Austin, Texas in 1946. In 1950, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Commerce from St. Edward’s University. Afterward, he joined the Marik Insurance Agency which his father had started in 1934.

Gene married Patricia Lyons in 1952 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. They were blessed with four children: Melinda +1989, John Patrick (Marie), Celeste +2011, and Marshall (Lois). They were married for fifty-eight years until Pati’s death in 2010.

Gene was the oldest of six children: Clarice, Frank +1986, Mark Marion +1937, Inez and Marc John +1971.

As his father before him, Gene enjoyed serving as the Justice of the Peace for many years. He had an enduring interest in archaeolog­y, architectu­re, geology, Pre-Columbian art, playing the piano, hunting at the San Bernardo Ranch and his Blacktail Ranch in Sanderson, Texas. There were many trips to Mexico to visit his life-long friends, the Oscar Eichelmann family.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at noon followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 1:30 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, Texas. Internment will follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in the family plot.
