SISTER DOROTHY SACHNIK, C.V.I.

Sister Dorothy Sachnik, C.V.I., died on February 18, 2017. Her parents were Frank and Ellen Sachnik. She was a native Houstonian, born on January 14, 1929. She attended All Saints and Blessed Sacrament elementary schools and high school at Incarnate Word Academy.

Sister entered the Congregati­on of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, Houston, September 8, 1946 and made final Profession of Vows on August 15, 1952.

She received her B.A. degree from University of St. Thomas and her M.Ed. from the University of Houston.

In her ministry of teaching Sister taught at schools in Port Arthur and Houston and has served as principal at St. Ambrose and Holy Name schools. After retiring from school ministry, she served for many years in the Office of Aging as the associate director in the Archdioces­e of Galveston-Houston and became director in 1995. After she retired in 2001 she enjoyed helping with the Heritage Collection of the convent and other things.

Sister had many interests and always stayed busy. She was an expert at tatting, a technique for handcrafti­ng a particular­ly durable lace that she used frequently to dress up collars of blouses. She was a faithful servant, not only in her ministry but also, she served her community well. Her creative bent also drew her to join the “Sugar Sticks”, a group of ukulele players, who entertain around the City and bring smiles to so many faces.

Sister Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brothers, Norman Sachnik, (Margie), Lamar Sachnik, (Alba), Edward Sachnik (Joan); nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be on Monday, February 20, 2017, 4:006:00 p.m., followed by the Wake Service at 6:00 p.m., at Incarnate Word Convent, 3400 Bradford Street, Houston, Texas. Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at the convent Chapel with Rev. Carl Belisch, C.S.B., celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
