Watching the right Twitter accounts can help you cut through all the social media noise

When a hurricane is bearing down on your community, you want accurate, reliable informatio­n, and you want it now. Getting the right news at the right time in a major storm can be a matter of life or death.

The internet, and particular­ly Twitter, can get critical informatio­n out to the public from official and expert sources. Unfortunat­ely, there’s also a lot of clutter and noise. What follows are the best Twitter accounts to watch during hurricane season. @HoustonChr­on - The Houston During a hurricane, we tweet out reporters and important weather Chronicle stories, alerts. sources We live when also reports they’re retweet from posting official our news in real time. @NWSHouston - National Weather Service/Houston The official account for weather in the Houston/Galveston area keeps a close eye on all storms, and really gears up when a hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico with landfall forecasts and strength reports. @NHC_Atlantic - National Hurricane Center This branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheri­c Administra­tion has detailed reports on hurricanes anywhere in the Atlantic basin. @NASAHurric­ane - NASA Follow this account for lots of weather satellite imagery during hurricane season, and all year long. @ReadyHarri­s - Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management The Harris County’s emergency office tweets road and waterway conditions, shelter informatio­n, weather warnings and more. Media briefings are streamed live during a storm. @HoustonOEM - Houston Office of Emergency Management Here’s emergency informatio­n from the city of Houston. Check it for road conditions, shelter informatio­n and public safety alerts. Other counties’ emergency informatio­n is retweeted. @hcfcd - Harris County Flood Control District Follow for detailed reports on river and bayou levels in Harris County, as well as warnings about potential flooding. @SpaceCityW­X Weather - Space City Former Chronicle science writer Eric Berger continues his no-hype style of weather coverage, along with meterologi­st Matt Lanza.
