Mary Jane Price Sponsel passed away on Monday, the 16th of April 2018, at her home in Houston, she was 95 years of age.

She was born in Houston on the 12th of December 1922, a fourth generation Houstonian. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1940 and attended Mount Vernon Junior College in Washington, D.C. and the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty three years, Thane T. Sponsel, M.D.; her parents, J. Emmet Price and Mamie J. Elsbury Price; and her brother, John E. Price, Jr. She is survived by her children, Mary S. Stein and her husband Russell, Thane T. Sponsel, Jr. and his wife Karen, and Sally S. Kerr and her husband David. She is also survived by her grandchild­ren, Paul C. Moore, Jr. and his wife Pilar, C. Tyler Moore and his wife Hallie, Thane T. Sponsel III and his wife Katie, Sarah M. Sanders and her husband Shane, Mary Jane Kerr, and John J. Yeary. Also surviving are her great grandchild­ren, Paul C. Moore III, Charles E. Moore, David B. Moore, Marion Moore, Charles Moore, Thane T. Sponsel IV, C. Brooke Sponsel, A. Reed Sponsel, Cole Sanders; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was a past member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a current member of The Church of St. John the Devine. She was a past member of the Junior League of Houston, past president of the Trinity Church Endowment Board, past board member of the Trinity Church Women’s Associatio­n, past board member of Visiting Nurses Associatio­n, past board member of the American Cancer Society of Harris County, past board member of the Point Venture Property Owners Associatio­n, a past member of the Harris County Medical Auxiliary, a member of the Huguenot Society of the founders of Manakin Towne in the Colony of Virginia, and a member of the Late Bloomers Garden Club. She was a long-time member of the River Oaks Country Club. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, interior design and homemaking.

The family would like to express its gratitude to her care givers, Irvin Tantuco, M.D., Carmen Saavedra, Michelle Estes, Kimberly Taylor, Kathy Skinner, and special family friends Geraldine Sadberry and Noemi Martinez.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 23rd of April, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

At a later date the family will gather for a private memorial service.
