CHICAGO — Tests revealed White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar suffered a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm when he collapsed in the dugout during the sixth inning of Friday’s game against the Astros.

The team announced Farquhar, 31, was in stable but critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Rush University Medical Center.

“Getting that update was very scary,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family and him and the White Sox and the team. It’s an ugly scene.”

Farquhar relieved White Sox starting pitcher James Shields with one out in the sixth inning, allowing a ground-rule double to George Springer and a homer to Carlos Correa before recording the final two outs. He threw 15 pitches.

Farquhar collapsed in the dugout and was tended to by on-site medical personnel. He was transported by ambulance to Rush University Medical Center where, on Saturday, the diagnosis was rendered.

White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Saturday that Farquhar “had a strong heartbeat, a good pulse and was breathing well” when he left Guaranteed Rate Field after passing out.

Renteria said no one on the team saw advance signs that Farquhar might be suffering from the condition.

“I mean, it crushes us in this clubhouse,” Shields said Saturday. “And nothing really matters baseballwise when something like that happens, you know?

“When you see one of your brothers go down like that, it’s not very fun to watch, and he’s such a resilient human being and we’re praying for him.”

Hinch said he exchanged text messages with Renteria upon being briefed on Farquhar’s condition.

“It was a scary incident last night,” Hinch said before Saturday’s game. “We could see across the way that something was going on. I think some of our guys saw him vomit, and as the group kind of went around him, it just became a scary scene and we didn’t really know what was going on.”

Farquhar is in his seventh Major League season and second with the White Sox.

“It’s heavy hearts for everybody,” Hinch said. “Certainly a heavy-heart type day when one of your teammates is dealing with that and, certainly, as a baseball family we will all root for him.”
