Rockets guard Jason Terry has important roles on the team this year — veteran leader, 3-point specialist, backup point guard. But more important than those are his role as “Coach” Terry.

When Terry isn’t in the game, he can be found standing up along the bench, yelling out to the team, cheering them on.

The players have jokingly referred to him as Coach Terry since training camp.

“I love it because it’s onthe-job training for me, being in tune to the game the whole time,” Terry said. “I want to coach when I’m done, so that’s just getting lessons on the fly. The other thing is supporting your teammates. It’s hard enough for those guys to be out there competing against the other team. But for you to compete and know you have five other guys cheering for you, it just gives you that ultraadded boost.”

At Orlando on Wednesday, coach Kevin McHale rested Terry the whole game.

“It was killing me that I was doing coaching and I was encouraging them, but that I couldn’t go out there and play,” he said.

Terry had two points in 13 minutes against the Warriors on Saturday. rence Jones is getting close, said coach Kevin McHale on Saturday.

Jones, who has been out since Nov. 3 with a nerve issue in his leg, has been working out regularly and has put in some time with the team at practice.

On Friday, he stayed after practice to work on post moves.

“Terrence is in his final stages of getting back on the court soon,” McHale said. and the Rockets have added Josh Smith, Corey Brewer and Alexey Shved since then as well.

Last time the two played, Golden State center Andrew Bogut was out.

“Dwight didn’t play the first two, so you have to deal with the lobs and the rolls to the rim. And then adding Josh Smith has changed them a little bit. But they are still doing the same things,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

Bogut had two points and six rebounds in 20 minutes in Golden State’s win over the Rockets on Saturday night.

Howard led the Rockets with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

“They are a different team with him in the game,” Bogut said. “It is a bigger challenge for us.”
