Astros outright five to trim roster A’s giving Colon Angels decline second chance Haren’s option
The Astros announced Saturday they outrighted outfielders J. B. Shuck and Brian Bogusevic and righthanded pitchers Chuckie Fick, Jorge De Leon and Arcenio Leon.
Shuck, Bogusevic and De Leon are free agents. Fick will join Class AAA Oklahoma City. Leon was claimed byMilwaukee.
The Astros’ roster is at 31 players.
Shuck, 25, joined the Astros in 2008. The center fielder spent 2012 at Oklahoma City, batting .298 and stealing 12 bases in 115 games.
Bogusevic, 28, was selected by the Astros with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 draft. The right fielder hit .227 during three seasons with the team and batted just .203 in 146 games last season.
Fick, 26, was acquired last July off waivers from St. Louis. The reliever appeared in 18 games for the Astros, posting a 4.30 ERA and striking out 17 in 23 innings.
De Leon, 25, spent 2012 with Class A Lancaster, going 2- 9 with a 7.70 ERA.
Leon, 26, spent 2012 with Class AA Corpus Christi, going 3- 2 with two saves and a 4.38 ERA.
Suspended pitcher Bartolo Colon is getting a second chance with the Athletics, agreeing to terms on a $ 3 million, one- year contract that includes potential performance bonuses.
The 39- year- old Colon was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 22 after testing positive for testosterone. The ban will run five games into the 2013 season.
Dan Haren became a free agent late Friday after the Angels failed to work out a trade and then declined the pitcher’s 2013 option.
Haren, a three- time All- Star from 2007- 09, gets a $ 3.5 million buyout under the deal. The Angels’ decision came after a proposed trade to the Cubs for closer Carlos Marmol fell apart.
