Walter was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend to all who knew him. Walter is survived by his beloved wife Carol (Dohan) Steuernagel of 66 years, his sons, Chris Steuernagel of Tampa, FL and Craig Steuernagel (Mary Ann Connors Steuernagel) of Cromwell, and his grandsons Matthew Steuernagel (fiancée Amanda Potts) of Cromwell and Cameron Steuernagel of Tampa, FL, all of whom held a special place in his heart. In addition to his immediate family, Walter is predeceased by his sister, Ethel (Steuernagel) Tenson, stepbrother, E. Paul Smith, and stepsisters Audrey (Smith) Dipinto and Beverly (Smith) Sewell. Walter had a passion for sports. He attended East Hartford High School and he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling. Following High School, Walter enlisted with the US Marines proudly serving his country in the Korean War. His service was a source of immense pride for him, and he carried the values instilled in him during his military service throughout his life. After serving in the marines, Walter met and married Carol who affectionately called him “Wally.” Carol remained his rock and constant companion throughout their remarkable journey together. While raising their family and working full-time, Walter earned his Associates Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hartford in 1972. Beginning his career as a draftsman at Pratt & Whitney, Walter transitioned to purchasing agent for Thomaston Special Products and Stanley Tools where he worked for 20 years before retiring. In addition to his love of sports, Walter had a deep love for the outdoors, spending countless hours fishing and hunting. He eagerly shared these activities with his sons, creating lasting memories, especially with their many camping trips. In retirement Walter enjoyed gardening, sports--especially UCONN women's basketball, and most of all his family, who were his pride and joy. Walter provided unwavering support, guidance, and love. His love for his children and grandchildren knew no bounds, and his memory will forever live on in their hearts. Walter will be remembered for his selflessness and his genuine concern for others. He always put the needs of his family and friends before his own, offering a helping hand and a listening ear whenever needed. His kind and compassionate nature touched the lives of many, and hopefully will inspire kindness and selflessness in all of us. His absence will be deeply felt.
