- By Lila Bromberg

The Uconn women’s basketball team is headed to Canada for Aaliyah Edwards‘ homecoming game.

The Huskies will face Toronto Metropolitan University on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Mattamy Athletic Centre to honor the 6-foot-3 forward in her senior season, the program announced Thursday.

The first meeting between the two programs will be played in Toronto, approximately 164 miles from Edwards’ hometown of Kingston, Ontario. It will be Uconn’s first trip to Canada since 2017, when it made the trip for former Husky Kia Nurse‘s homecoming game against Duquesne in the same building.

TMU plays in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference, part of U Sports, which is the national governing body of collegiate sports in Canada. The Bold went 15-9 before having last season cut short in the OUA quarterfinals. They went undefeated the season prior.

Toronto Metropolitan University is coached by Carly Clarke, an assistant coach for the Canadian National Team. Edwards has been a member of Canada Basketball since 2017. She has played with the senior national team since 2019, representing her country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 2022 GLOBL JAM and the 2023 FIBA Americup.

Edwards had a careerbest season for the Huskies in 2022-23, averaging 16.6 points, nine rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 58.9% from the field. She was named an Associated Press third-team All-american, the Big East Most Improved Player and Big East Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

The trip to Canada is one of three homecoming games for Uconn in 2023-24.

The Huskies are going overseas to Zagreb, Croatia, home of Nika Mühl, later this month and will host Ball State, where Mühl’s sister plays, Dec. 6. They will also will face Minnesota in Minneapolis on Nov. 19 for Paige Bueckers, a native of Hopkins, Minnesota.
