Seven state teams in national top 25

- By Dave Stewart STAFF WRITER

The New Canaan girls lacrosse team remained No. 1, while the New Canaan boys lacrosse team is No. 5 in the latest USA Lacrosse Public Schools National Top 25 rankings.

In all, seven Connecticut teams are represented in the two lists: Three for the girls and four for the boys.

USA Lacrosse started the public school rankings in April with monthly updates. Private and prep schools are eliminated from the overall rankings, which are compiled by USA Lacrosse Magazine lacrosse writers, with input from coaches, according to the USA Lacrosse website.

USA Lacrosse said that the “presence of public schools in the Top 25s has been shrinking over the last two decades, but interest in them has not.

There are still plenty of powerful public school programs that deserve recognition, and there are probably more requests to see public-only rankings than anything else.”

New Canaan (11-1-1), which defeated Sacred Heart Academy from Long Island 12-7 on Saturday, held the No. 1 spot in the girls rankings for the second straight month.

Darien (8-3-1), which lost to Wilton 9-8 on Thursday, remained No. 2 in the rankings. On Saturday. the Blue Wave won 11-7 over Summit, New Jersey’s top-ranked team in the LaxNumbers formula.

Wilton (11-1) is ranked No. 8 and is on a six-game win streak, which includes the victory over Darien, it’s first win against the Wave since 2011.

The USA Public School rankings were compiled before Wilton’s game against Darien on Thursday.

In the boys Top 25, New Canaan (11-2) is the top Connecticut team, coming

in at No. 5. The Rams bounced back from a onegoal loss to Fairfield Prep and defeated Darien 7-5, and Staples 5-1 during the past week.

Connecticut is also represented by No. 21 Darien (8-5), No. 23 Cheshire (10-2) and No. 25 Ridgefield (9-3).
