Male finalists named for scholar athlete of the year

The Sports Alley/El Dorado News-Times Scholar Athlete Banquet Awards will be held on Thursday, May 30 at College Avenue Church of Christ. The finalists for Male Scholar Athlete of the Year are: El Dorado's Jonah Davis, El Dorado's Riley Dumas, Parkers Chapel's Will Hardy, El Dorado's Peyton Howard and West Side Christian's Elijah Narciso.

Davis played baseball for the Wildcats. He earned a 3.93 grade point average and was a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, state math competitio­n and has over 80 service hours accumulate­d.

“Jonah has set goals and worked hard to achieve them, setting the example of how athletes should work toward goals and overcome obstacles,” said El Dorado baseball coach Jeff Burson.

Dumas competed in cross country and track and field at El Dorado. He had a 4.125 grade point average and was a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Steering Committee and student council.

“Riley is a model student-athlete. He is respected by all his teachers and peers and he makes our cross country and track teams better,” said El Dorado cross country coach John Koonce.

Hardy played basketball and tennis at Parkers Chapel. He sported a 4.18 grade point average and was a member of student council and was Beta Club reporter.

“Will was a starter and a vital leader for our team,” said Parkers Chapel coach Josh Langley. “Will's role for us was not as a scorer but as a guy we could count on to be where he was supposed to be and do what we coached him to do while making those around him better.”

Howard played baseball and golf at El Dorado. He owned a 4.29 grade point average and was a member of National Honor Society, Steering Committee and student council.

“Peyton excels in academics and competes as a multi-sport athlete,” said El Dorado golf coach Chris Ezell. “He earned All-Conference in golf and his 4.29 GPA ranks third out of 273 in his class.”

Narciso competed in basketball, track, baseball and golf for the Warriors. He had a 4.08 grade point average and was Student Council President, National Honor Society, National Merit Finalist and Peer Mentoring.

“Elijah is an incredibly diligent worker. No task is too small for his 100 percent effort,” said West Side athletic director Randall Miller. “Leadership like that has had a fantastic impact in our school and our student-athletes.”
