Summer volunteer opportunities
Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a variety of exciting and engaging camps every summer. Adults and students 14 or older who enjoy working with children can become camp volunteers. Volunteers can gain job experience, fulfill service hours or simply enjoy helping while having fun. Volunteers are needed all summer, but we can accommodate your schedule. Some positions require a specific time commitment or age requirement. Volunteer opportunities are available at Rosewood Arts Center, the Habitat Environmental Center and at the Kettering Recreation Center. Contact the Volunteer Office at 937-296-2433 for more details.

Memorial Day in Kettering
In observation of Memorial
Day, city of Kettering administrative offices will be closed May 27. A Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at Beavertown Cemetery, 3170 Valleywood Drive. American Legion Post 598 will honor the fallen, and the community is welcome to come pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Memorial Day ceremony will include the reading of the last roll, firing of volleys and sounding of “Taps.” The ceremony will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and will be brief.
Summer fun in Kettering
Adventure Reef Water Park will open for the season May 25. It will remain open until Labor Day weekend and offers waterslides, a leisure pool, a splash pad and the Clownfish Cove kiddie pool. The splash pad at J.F. Kennedy Park, which also opens Memorial Day weekend, is a community favorite summer destination that’s always free. Check out the farm-themed playground while you’re there. Visit www.playkettering.org for more details.
Plan your neighborhood block party
Block parties offer an opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another and develop the kind of supportive relationship many of us remember from the neighborhoods where we grew up. At the very least, you’ll become more familiar with your neighbors and build the kind of bonds that are critical to a sense of belonging.
The city believes so strongly in the power of these gatherings that we offer assistance with everything from planning to road closures. Our police and fire departments cannot guarantee attendance due to workload, but will do their best to celebrate with you. Visit www.ketteringoh.org/ neighborhood-block-parties.
