GAMES OF NOTE BEYOND THE TOP 25

-

■ Wake Forest 42, Louisville 32

John Wolford threw four of his five TD passes to Greg Dortch to lead Wake Forest. Wolford became the first Wake Forest player in 19 years to throw for more than 400 yards, passing for 461 and completing 28 of 34 passes and adding a short scoring run for the Demon Deacons (5-3, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference). Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson rushed for 161 yards and three TDs — of 7, 4 and 55 yards — but the last two came after the Cardinals (5-4, 2-4) fell behind by 25 in the second half. He was sacked a season-high six times, was 27 of 44 for 330 yards passing with a 20-yard score to Charles Standberry with 14 seconds left, and earlier threw an interception in the end zone.

■ Arkansas 38, Mississippi 37

Connor Limpert made a 34-yard field goal with 4 seconds left, and Arkansas rallied from a 24-point deficit. The Razorbacks (3-5, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) trailed 31-7 in the second quarter but scored two TDs following two Ole Miss turnovers to pull within 31-21 by halftime. Ole Miss (3-5, 1-4) pushed ahead 37-28 in the fourth quarter, but a costly fumble was scooped up by Arkansas’ Kevin Richardson and returned 22 yards for a TD to make it 37-35.

■ Pittsburgh 31, Virginia 14

Darrin Hall ran for 111 yards and a TD, Quadree Henderson returned a punt for a score, and Pittsburgh’s defense kept Virginia in check as the Panthers (4-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) kept their flickering bowl hopes alive by winning their second straight. Pitt’s defense stopped the Cavaliers (5-3, 2-2) on downs three times, the last coming with a spirited fourth-down stop at the goal line with 4:35 remaining that ended any chance of a late Virginia rally.

■ Texas 38, Baylor 7

Shane Buechele threw for a TD and ran for another to lead Texas over winless Baylor. DeShon Elliot intercepted Baylor quarterback Zach Smith and returned it 43 yards for a score in the first minute of the game, and the Longhorns never trailed. It was Elliot’s national-leading sixth interception of the season and the second he returned for a score. It was also the beginning of a defensive performance for Texas (4-4, 3-2 Big 12) in which it forced three turnovers and limited Baylor to 249 yards of total offense — 3.3 yards per play.

■ Michigan 35, Rutgers 14

Brandon Peters helped Michigan score TDs on his first three drives after Jim Harbaugh finally benched John O’Korn after another shaky performance. Harbaugh put Peters in and the redshirt freshman completed 10 of 14 passes for 124 yards with a TD. Michigan (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) broke a fourth-place tie in the East division with the Scarlet Knights (3-5, 2-3) with a desperately needed win after losing two of three and falling out of The Associated Press poll for the first time in two-plus years.

■ Colorado 44, California 28

Steven Montez bounced back from a benching a week earlier and threw for 347 yards and three TDs for Colorado (5-4, 2-4 Pac-12). Montez, who completed 20 of 26 passes, also ran for a score as the Buffaloes kept alive their hopes of reaching back-to-back bowls for the first time in more than a decade. The Golden Bears (4-5, 1-5) saw their postseason hopes fade despite a three-TD day by Ross Bowers, who was 29 of 52 for 359 yards.

■ Boston College 35, Florida State 3

A.J. Dillon ran for 149 yards and a TD, and Boston College extended its surprising turnaround Friday night with a third straight victory. Anthony Brown threw for one TD and ran for another, and Jeff Smith threw for a TD on a flanker option. Just two years removed from a winless Atlantic Coast Conference season, the Eagles (5-4, 3-3) have now won three straight ACC games. BC students stormed the field after the victory. The Seminoles (2-5, 2-4) fell three games below .500 for the first time since Bobby Bowden’s first season in 1976.
