100 Years Ago – 1921:
Following the discovery that lumber was being hauled during the night and early hours of morning from the storage yards of Stacey G. Glauser & Son, along the river front at the foot of Central avenue, Chester, led to an investigation which resulted in the rounding up late last night of four of the alleged principals in the thefts. It is believed that thousands of dollars’ worth of material have been disposed of during recent months.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
Samuel S. Pinkerton,
86, well-known Media resident and oldest active Democratic Party worker in Delaware County, died at his home on Saturday. He started voting Democratic at his majority when he cast his ballot for
John Hancock, unsuccessful candidate for president. His interest in politics dated from that time. Elections officials in strongly Republican Edgemont Township challenged his first vote. “That made me so mad,” he said in an interview after his cast his 131st vote last election day, “I’ve been in politics ever since.”
50 Years Ago – 1971:
Market Street, generally regarded as the oldest street in Chester, today became the “Avenue of the States.” The new designation, conceived by members of the Delaware County Bar Association in accord with its plan to revitalize the city’s downtown business district, became a reality shortly after 10:30a.m. today when Mayor John H. Nacrelli adjourned a special meeting of city council to the intersection of Fifth and Market streets where he affixed the first street sign hearing the new designation.
25 Years Ago – 1996: Sgt. 1.C. Michael J. Visek, son of Franklin J. and Jean M. Visek, 2318W. Deerfield Drive, Media, was awarded the United Nations Medal as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces whose service included duty in Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia and other U.N. designated mission areas. Visek serves as a military police detachment first sergeant at Ft. Bragg, N.C. He is a 1976 graduate of Penncrest High School, Middletown.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
Citing concerns about the loss of open space, roadway congestion and stormwater management, residents from Darby Borough and surrounding municipalities voiced their concerns over a proposed shopping center on a 35-acre Springfield Road tract in Darby Borough at a town forum in Aldan Elementary School.
