Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1920: With Lent having passed by safely without a fish bone accident, and the subsequent season not producing a victim, it remained for William Shapiro,
144W. Third St., Chester, to register at the Chester Hospital as the first suffered from a jammed windpipe. Shapiro was sitting down to a toothsome meal of shad, or whale steak, when suddenly he uttered a grunt of distress and made funny motions with his face, which could be inferred that he was choking. As a matter of fact, he was.
75 Years Ago – 1945:
He liked fires so much he started his own and, getting brazen over his success, joined a local fire company and then had the added thrill of fighting the fires he started. That was the theme of a teen’s admission to state police on Monday afternoon when they traced him to his home. The 17-year-old is now lodged in the House of Detention in Chester to await the action of Juvenile Court this Friday.
50 Years Ago – 1970: Delaware County Judge James H. Gorbey is one of five men recommended to U.S. Attorney Gen. John Mitchell for appointment to the U.S. District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania. U.S. Sen. Hugh Scott announced Thursday that he and U.S. Sen. Richard Schweiker, both Republicans, joined in the recommendation. The county jurist was mayor of Chester when he was selected in 1968 for the position of county judge by Gov. Raymond P. Shafer.
25 Years Ago – 1995: Teacher assaults, a shooting and a bomb threat has Chester High School teachers on the edge. Protesting the violent incidents,
40 teachers marched in front of the school before classes Friday. “Eighteen teachers have been assaulted this year, there was a shooting at the vo-tech building and yesterday the school had to be evacuated because of a cherry bomb,” said one teacher.
10 Years Ago – 2010: It appears voters in the 7th Congressional District will have only two candidates to choose from in November. Dawn Stensland Mendte, a former news anchor for Fox 29, has decided against running for the seat as an Independent. The 17-year news veteran currently lives in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. She was looking for a home in Delaware County, where Stensland Mendte planned to run as an independent conservative.
