La Salle erases 21-point deficit, beats Penn State

A 21-point deficit wasn’t too much for La Salle to handle Sunday.

The Explorers’ freshmen

tri0 combined for 39 points as La Salle topped Penn State, 69-67, the program’s first win over a Power 5 conference team since 2015.

Claire Jacobs scored

17 points, Jordon Lewis added 12 points and seven rebounds and Amy Jacobs came off the bench to tally

10 points for La Salle (3-1). The Explorers outscored Penn State, 33-13, in the fourth quarter to rally at the Bryce Jordan Center.

A layup by Lewis with nine seconds left put the Explorers up for good. Shalina Miller then blocked a shot by Lauren Ebo with one second left, Lewis grabbing the rebound. Miller, a BonnerPren­dergast All-Delco, had five points and five rebounds. PENN 74, IONA 42 >> Phoebe Sterba scored 17 points as Penn stayed unbeaten, the first time in program history it has started a season 3-0.

Kayla Padilla and Eleah Parker scored 14 points each, Kennedy Suttle tallied her first collegiate doubledoub­le with 11 points and 11 assists and Kendall Grasela made the offense run with a career-best 10 assists. VILLANOVA 73, FORDHAM 66 >> Madison Siegrist scored 29 points, and Mary Gedaka added 27 as the Wildcats (13) got their first win of the season on a trip to the Bronx.

Seigrist and Gedaka combined to shoot 24-for-32 from the field. As a team, the Wildcats shot 62.5 percent (30for-48) from the floor. CABRINI 68, STOCKTON 47 >> A 21-point edge in the first quarter was all the Cavaliers needed to stay unbeaten and claim the Stockton Tournament title.

Kate Lannon (Sun Valley) led all scorers with

14 points, and Kate King added 12 off the bench for the Cavs (3-0).

SETON HALL 55, SAINT JOSEPH’S 39 >> Gabby Smalls had six points and 12 rebounds, but the Hawks (2-1) shot just 32.7 percent from the field, including 0-for12 from 3-point range, and

5-for-14 from the line. Claire Melia led the Hawks with seven points. CONNECTICU­T 83, TEMPLE

54 >> Mia Davis scored 18 points, and Asonah Alexander added 11 points, but the Owls (3-2, 0-1 AAC) couldn’t keep up in their American Athletic Conference opener against the No. 4 Huskies.

Men’s Basketball

William Blet scored 18 points, but Eastern couldn’t overcome a 12-point halftime deficit in dropping a 66-64 decision to Mary Washington in the championsh­ip game of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament in Fredericks­burg, Va.

Clifton Adams, Draig Ruff and Gabe Perez added

11 points each for the Eagles (3-2). PSU-BRANDYWINE 97, BERKELEY 90 >> Bryce Barrouk scored 15 of his game-high

29 points in the second half, grabbed eight rebounds and was 10-for-10 from the line for the Lions.

Jacob Hunt added 25 points, five rebounds and six assists, Ketquan Gatewood tallied a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds and Quentin Beasley added

14 points for PSUB (1-1).
