100 Years Ago – 1918: Several persons had a narrow escape from serious injury, if not death, last night at Third and Morton streets, owing to the carelessne­ss of a youth who sought Thurlow Park as a place to discharge a .32-caliber revolver loaded with bullets instead of blank cartridges. One of the leaden pellets lodged against the front walls of the Felton Fire Company’s engine house, narrowly missing bystanders.

75 Years Ago – 1943: With the United Nations the yearly theme of the Motion Picture Forum of the Delaware County Federation, a program on this scale was arraigned for the meeting of the group last week in Upper Darby. Presiding was Mrs. John C. Moore, county chairman. Mrs. Moore began a discussion by advocating closer co-operation with local exhibitors, stressing a greater use of government films, and a fuller knowledge of motion pictures, especially interestin­g to club women and their families.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Strong winds and heavy rain – mixed with snow – belted the Delaware County area Monday night and early today, felling trees, damaging property and making driving hazardous. Winds with gusts up to nearly 50miles an hour pushed the storm across Delaware County, causing automobile accidents and scattered power failures. Swarthmore police said about 25trees were uprooted in that community alone.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Delaware County’s World War I veterans, as well as those who gave their lives in the War to End All Wars, were honored yesterday at a special Veterans Day service at the entrance of Smedley Park, Springfiel­d. There, before a freshly refurbishe­d World War I monument that bears the names of the county’s war dead, about two dozen people gather to pray and remember. A new plaque commemorat­ing the 75th anniversar­y of Armistice Day, donated by Cumberland Cemeteries in Lima, was dedicated by members of the Delaware County Veterans Council, who reorganize­d the ceremony. Two veterans of the Great War watched during the half-hour proceeding­s: Bill Shone, 94, of Springfiel­d, and Joseph Doan, 98, of Lansdowne.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Marple Commission­ers formally unveiled a memorial at Monday night’s meeting for former township Manager Joe Flicker, who died suddenly in July. State Sen. Ted Erickson, R-26, of Newtown, was among those who offered remembranc­es of Flicker, who had served as township manager since 1984. A marker with the words “In Loving Memory – Joseph William Flicker” inscribed on it was placed in the garden outside what was once Flicker’s office.
