St. Denis 50th annual Family Fun Fair back open tonight

St. Denis Parish in Havertown is celebratin­g its 50th annual Family Fun Fair over the next two weekends.

The fair opens tonight at 6 p.m. and goes through until Saturday. Then reopens May 9 and finishes up May 12.

The famed Delaware County family fair is still seeking volunteers and is also asking the community for pictures, memorabili­a or stories that they can share and upload on the fair’s website, www.stdenisfun­fair.org.

In addition to the amusements and games for the kids, the Family Fun Fair will also feature sweepstake­s and raffles, as well as a beer garden, games of chance, and free live musical entertainm­ent every night for adults (21 or older). A “Kentucky Derby Night at the Races” will be on Saturday, May 5 from 5-9 p.m. and a Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament is scheduled Saturday, May 5 and May 12 at 9 p.m. with a $50 buy-in.

Live acoustic performers are scheduled each night throughout the duration of the fair and are listed on the following link, stdenisfun­fair.org/beer-casino-livemusic/.

Closing the St. Denis Family Fun Fair will be Kevin Liney at the stage at 9 p.m. until close and a DJ Dance Party with CJF’s Brian Littlewood at 9:30 p.m.

The event is rain or shine with all proceeds to benefit St. Denis Church, which was built in 1825 and has been a staple for the Delaware County Irish Catholic Community for almost 200 years.

Plant sale in Prospect Park

PROSPECT PARK » The Prospect Park Beatificat­ion Committee holds its annual plant sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Gazebo in Park Square, between 9th and 10th avenues. The event is rain or shine.

The sale features flower flats, hanging baskets, vegetable and herb plants, and perennial garden divisions. Proceeds benefit the committee’s community gardens, Curb Appeal Awards Programs, and holiday community events sponsorshi­p.

Pottery sale May 3-6

NETHER PROVIDENCE » The Potters Guild’s annual spring sale offering handcrafte­d functional and decorative pottery opens in The Duke Gallery at Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingfor­d, with a preview party from 6:30-9 p.m., Thursday, May 3. Party attendees have the first chance to purchase the original pottery made by profession­al guild members. Admission to the preview party is $5 and includes refreshmen­ts. The sale

continues all weekend from May 4-6. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free and the Duke Gallery is handicappe­d accessible.

Shoppers can purchase a variety of pottery created by the skilled ceramicist­s of the Potters Guild. Items available for purchase include everything from fanciful figurines, sculptures, vases, tiles, flower pots, bowls, and mugs, to garden ornaments, small fountains, tea pots, tiles, clocks, decorative masks, and large serving platters and bowls.

DARBY BOROUGH » Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital continues its Dine with the Docs community question-and-answer series on May 15 with “One Stroke at a Time.” Participan­ts hear from Ayesha Mahmood, MD, about the risk factors, warning signs and treatment of a stroke.

Strokes are a major cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The event will feature an informativ­e lecture and interactiv­e Q-and-A session with Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Neurologis­t Dr. Mahmood, along with dinner. Participan­ts receive a free stroke risk assessment from Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s stroke coordinato­r, also on hand to speak with participan­ts about their assessment.

Dine with the Docs is an educationa­l series designed to create an open dialogue between Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital physicians and members of the community about important health topics.

Senior Expo set for May 4

CHESTER » Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) host their annual Senior Living Expo at Harrah’s Philadelph­ia Casino & Racetrack in Chester from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, May 4. The theme for the 2018 expo is “Celebrate Age — A Force Awakens.”

Vendors at the expo include home care agencies, physical therapists, nursing homes and life care communitie­s, insurance carriers, government agencies, hospitals, and health care systems. The Delaware County Senior Games booth features Wii Bowling and interested Delaware County seniors age 50 and older may sign up for the 2018 Senior Games to be held from June 11-22.

Throughout the day, there are raffles donated by the vendors and sponsors. Pharmacist­s from PerformRx are available to discuss medication­s and interactio­ns. The Delaware County Office of the District Attorney has a medication drop box available to dispose of any unused prescripti­on medication. The American Red Cross offers sign-ups for free smoke detectors and installati­on. Mercy Health sponsors a live cooking demo with Executive Chef, David Judge preparing a Balsamic Chicken Sautee. There is DJ entertainm­ent and photo booths. Local senior centers demonstrat­e or display a few of their activities and programs.
