Joseph W. Ortlieb, 89 of Hershey’s Mill PA, formerly of Drexel Hill, Sarasota, FL, and Ocean City, NJ, passed away on April 6, 2018.

Born on March 5, 1929 to Margaret and George Ortlieb in Philadelph­ia, Joe was a devoted family man, fun friend, Master Brewer and an innovative business man.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 66 years, Maralyn, and his loving children: Linda (Lew) Tozour, Laurie (Mike) Gray, Joe Ortlieb Jr, Jeanne Stewart Ortlieb, Maribeth (Barry) Boehmer, and Trupert (Cris) Ortlieb

He will be remembered as Pajoe by his Grandchild­ren and (Great Grandchild­ren): Luke and Erin Tozour (Zella), Michael Gray Jr. and Angela Berrios, Meghan and Mike Maguire (Mikey Jr), Amy and Matt Kelly (Graysen, Maddie Mae), Nicole Ortlieb, Joseph Ortlieb and Sara Knauss, Andrew Ortlieb, Alycia Boehmer Thomas and Omar Andrade (Jacob, Libby, Daniel, David, Sam and Pepper), Jeff and Rachel Boehmer, Ryan Boehmer, Will Boehmer, Trupert Ortlieb Jr, Kate Ortlieb, Kevin Ortlieb and Michael Ortlieb

Joe’s Grandfathe­r, Trupert Ortlieb, was a German immigrant and a Civil War veteran, and began brewing beer in Northern Liberties in 1869. Growing up, Joe labored in every department at Ortlieb Brewing Company. He met the love of his life, Maralyn Murphy at Bucknell University and was married in 1952. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Brewing from the U.S. Brewer’s Academy in Mount Vernon, NY, and was the vice president of the Brewers Associatio­n of America. He became owner and president of the H.F. Ortlieb Brewing Company in 1977.

Community involvemen­t was important to Joe: He sponsored charity golf outings, supported the Philadelph­ia firefighte­rs, was on the board of St. Mary’s Hospital, and volunteere­d for Meals on Wheels. He was a Director of Continenta­l Bank, Johnson Insurance Company, March of Dimes, Junior Baseball Federation (for kids), and Philadelph­ia Tribune Charities (Black Charitable Organizati­on).

Joe enjoyed family life in Drexel Hill and going to his kids’ games and events. Mr. Ortlieb was a celebrity when he showed up on the sidelines or at the college dorm to treat his kids’ friends to dinner. He shared his passion for boating, sailing, skiing, golf and tennis with his children, and was a member at Llanerch Country Club, Seaview Country Club, Ocean City Yacht Club, Idle Hour Tennis Club, The Meadows Country Club and Hershey’s Mill Golf Club. He was an avid reader, especially of historical novels.

Joe’s zest for life, integrity and loving spirit will never be forgotten.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 12 at St. Dorothy Church, 4910 Township Line Rd. Drexel Hill, PA. Friends may call on Wednesday April 11 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Thursday April 12 from 9:00 am to 9:45 am at St. Dorothy Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, 199 Old Gulph Rd, Conshohock­en, PA.
