Garnet Valley earns middle school wrestling title
Garnet Valley won the team championship at the Southeast Pennsylvania Middle School Wrestling Tournament in Quakertown.
The Jaguars piled up 209.5 points, with Interboro, the only other Delaware County school in the 32team field, finishing second with 185 points.
Garnet Valley had one individual champion, CJ Wood at 112 pounds. Sam DiTrolio (167), Austin Sorokanych (187), and Nick Mahoney (252) earned secondplace finishes.
Dan Hussein (97), Matt Ricci (102), and David Dorf (157) were third-place finishers. David Stango took fourth place at 77 pounds, and Matt Mesaros was fifth (107 pounds).
Other members of the team included Jason Bernard, Shayne Layer, Jared Park, Shane Olinger, Patrick Douglass, Nate Thompson, Luke English and Mark Emry.
The Garnet Valley team was coached by Mark Morey and Erik Hollingsworth.
Interboro’s Jake Finley was the champion in the 117-pound weight class, and teammates Victor Quintiliana (102) and Nate Shippy (112) earned second-place finishes. The Bucs’ Gavin Olivia (87 pounds) and Dominic D’Agostino (140) placed third.
Among the other Interboro wrestlers competing were Brian Mecouch, Edgar Carbajal, and Richie Newcomb.
The Garnet Valley High boys and girls basketball teams recently held “GV Basketball Best Buddy Day” for special needs students at the school.
In addition to a basketball clinic, students made spirit posters and were treated to refreshments.
Among the girls basketball players joining head coach Joe Woods and assistant coaches Mike Krautzel and Keli Anderson at the event were Brianne Borcky, Nicole Barnes, Emily McAteer, Sam McDonald, Jillian Nagy, Morgan Falcone, Brooklyn Ireland, Allison Tomasetti, Camryn Faith, Lexi Terris, Gabrielle Nee, Jodi Lamborn, Madi McKee, Liesl Dentinger, and Abbey Anderson.
Joining coaches Mike Brown, Bob Buttermore, Chris Duffin, Pat McCusker, and Ryan Brown were several boys players, including Austin Laughlin and Ryan Louden.
Among the parents who organized the event were Michelle Louden and Annmarie Borcky.
Former Academy of Notre Dame player Leanne Purcell attended the Irish’s Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association basketball tournament victory over Episcopal Academy Saturday afternoon.
Purcell, a junior at Villanova University, missed her senior season at Notre Dame while recovering from liver transplant surgery. She is in good health and continuing her studies in nursing at Villanova.
Her goal is to work at Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Delaware to help provide the kind of care she received when she was a patient there during her illness.
A special on the 2017 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame inductees will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, on ESPNU.
Among the inductees was Chester graduate Bo Ryan, whose coaching career began at Brookhaven Junior High and Sun Valley High.
Ryan won 747 games and made 27 postseason appearances as head coach of three collegiate programs. He led Wisconsin-Platteville to four NCAA Division III national titles. At the University of Wisconsin, he earned a school record 364 victories, won four Big Ten championships, was named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times, and took the Badgers to the NCAA Tournament in each of his 14 seasons as head coach, guiding two teams to the Final Four.
The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum on Iven Road in Radnor is holding a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mickey Vernon, the Marcus Hook native who won two American League batting titles during his major-league baseball career (1939-60).
There also are Black History Month features during February at the Museum, which has produced a poster saluting a number of Delaware County’s finest black athletes.
The Aston Sports Hall of Fame’s 19th annual awards dinner will be held Thursday, March 22, at Kings Mill.

The Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame’s 2018 awards dinner will take place Sunday, April 22, at Concordville Inn. Social hour begins at 4 p.m., with dinner at 5 o’clock.
Among those joining the Hall of Fame are basketball players Clarence Armstrong, Bill Carr, and John O’Reilly; football players Tim Chambers, Dan Connor, and John Esher; multisport athletes Dave Kasarsky, Rachael Becker-DeCecco and Joe Piela; track and field athletes Bo Smart and Jim Tuppeny (deceased); lacrosse players Jenn Cook and Kerri Whitaker; Olympians R. Norris Williams (deceased), Daniel Barrow (deceased), and William Hermann (deceased); body builder Cynthia Anast; and soccer player Sinead Farrelly.
Tickets are $45, or $40 for those who have paid membership dues by March 1. Tickets for children 10 and under cost $15. The deadline for table/ group reservations (10/12 per table) is April 7, and the deadline for ticket sales is April 12.
