John Vanore & Abstract Truth close Widener concert series March 19
CHESTER >> Widener University hosts the last of three Widener University Recital Series concerts at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 19, with a performance from the university’s Artist in Residence John Vanore and his group Astract Truth. The concert is held on the university’s Main Campus in the Kapelski Recital Hall, 14th and Chestnut streets. It is free and open to the public.
Vanore, a Springfield resident and alumnus from the Class of 1969, previously served as the director of music at the university. A veteran of jazz giant Woody Herman’s band, Vanore was a mainstay in the trumpet sections for music artists visiting Philadelphia including Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Sammy Davis and Michel LeGrand. He has also produced music for EMI, Atlantic and other record companies.
In Abstract Truth, Vanore has created a unique ensemble, merging the intimacy and unique voice of the soloist with the power of the big band. The music is storylife and thematic — soloists are many and original composition creates their landscape. Formed in the 1980s, the band’s first two releases, “Blue Route” and “Curiosity,” were recognized in the Downbeat reader’s poll as Album of the Year worthy. After a long hiatus, the ensemble reformed in 2009 around five of its veteran members. “Contagious Words” was the first product of the new ensemble and strongly established the group’s return with frequent national and international radio plays and reviews.
The ensemble’s personnel boast rich and diverse experiences including performing with Phil Woods, Buddy Rich, Slide Hampton, Randy Brecker, Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis, Pat Martino and many others
