County native takes new position at UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. >> Gloria Thomas has been named the new director of the Carolina Women’s Center (CWC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Thomas, a 1981 graduate of Chester High School, earned her bachelor’s degree at Swarthmore College, master’s at Villanova University and doctorate at University of Michigan. She is the daughter of the late Annette Pattlefoot, and the mother of Saidah Thandiwe Rahman and Sundiata Hamadi Rahman. Thomas previously served as director of the Center for the Education of Women (CEW) at the University of Michegan, and as Associate Director at the American Education.

The CWC was establishe­d in 1997 to address issues related to gender equity and women’s employment and education. It strives to create an inclusive education and work environmen­t where gender is not a barrier to success, difference and diversity are celebrated and everyone is safe to live, learn, teach and work without threat of harm or unequal treatment. The center represents and supports the interests of women students, faculty and staff on issues such as violence prevention, diversity and intersecti­onality, familyfrie­ndly workplace policies, profession­al developmen­t and pay equity. on CONWAY, S.C. >> Conway Robert V. DeNofio of Venter, N.J., formerly of Glen Mills, earned his bachelors degree in sports management on Aug. 5. DeNofio earned dean’s list recognitio­n during his time at the university. He is the son of Phyllis Frangione and the late Robert A. DeNofio.

ELIZABETHT­OWN, PA. >> Elizabetht­own has named 198 students to the College Honors Program, including Josh Fishman of Havertown; Emmett Pegan of Upper Chichester; and Evan Williams of Garnet Valley.

Widener University

CHESTER >> Fifteen incoming freshmen at Widener University have been selected for the Presidenti­al Service Corps/Bonner Leaders Program. Select freshmen are chosen each year for the Presidenti­al Service Corps/Bonner Leader Program based on their high school academic record, commitment to serving their communitie­s, and leadership potential. Students in the program volunteer 300 hours of service with a community partner in the city of Chester each year, and commit to an annual internatio­nal service trip for alternativ­e spring break. In addition, students participat­e in training and enrichment activities that help them develop leadership skills.
