Siblings charged after 6 children found in ‘deplorable’ conditions
Two Dixmoor siblings were accused of neglect and child endangerment after their six young children were found Monday living in “deplorable” conditions, without food and adult supervision, police said.
The elderly mother of one of the women, who also liveda t the home in the 14200 block of Lincoln Avenue, was found inside the residence sitting on a soiled mattress without sheets, Dixmoor police Chief Ron Burge said.
Police charged the halfsisters, Chiquita King, 32, and Giovanna Davis, 24, with misdemeanor neglect and child endangerment. King, who was legally her mother’s guardian and caregiver, also is charged with felony neglect of the elderly, Burge said.
He said police went to the house Monday with officials from the Department on Aging upon receiving complaints from neighbors.
When they arrived, police allegedly found six unsupervised children between the ages 2 and 12, and the elderly woman on the bed.
Burge said the woman was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island for treatment and the children — four of whom were King’s and two of whom were Davis’ — were placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
DCFS did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the children’s whereabouts or whether the agency had previously had contact with the family.
Burge said the village had placed a non occupancy order on the house, which will prevent anyone from living there until it passes an inspection.
He said therewere holes in the walls, glass missing from windows, mold throughout the home and apparent structural damage inside of it.
Davis was charged Wednesday and ordered held on $30,000 bail, and King was charged Thursday and ordered held on $100,000 bail, Burge said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether either was still in custody.
