SANTA ANITA San Clemente next for Ollie’s Candy

- By Steve Andersen

ARCADIA, Calif. – After success on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate Fields and dirt at Santa Anita, the undefeated stakes winner Ollie’s Candy is scheduled to start on turf for the first time next month at Del Mar.

Ollie’s Candy won her stakes debut in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on Saturday. Trainer William Morey said on Sunday she is likely to run in the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at a mile on turf July 21.

Changes in surfaces or distances do not seem to affect Ollie’s Candy.

“Why stop now?” Morey said. “We’re taking them as they come from now on. She’s proven herself.”

Owned by breeders Paul and Karen Eggert, Ollie’s Candy won her debut in a maiden race at six furlongs by 6 1/2 lengths at Golden Gate Fields on April 22 and followed with an easy victory by 7 3/4 lengths in an optional claimer at six furlongs there May 13.

In the $200,345 Summertime Oaks, Ollie’s Candy stalked pacesetter Thirteen Squared to early stretch and won a duel by a neck to give the Eggerts their first graded stakes win and Morey his first win at the Grade 2 level.

“They’re hard to come by,” he said.

Ollie’s Candy has earned $151,800 in her three wins.

Morey, 44, won his first graded stakes in January with Coniah in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes.

Anonymity has stakes in future

The 4-year-old Anonymity returned from a layoff of more than eight months to win an optional claimer at Santa Anita on Saturday, leaving trainer Richard Mandella optimistic that the filly can be a stakes runner this year.

Ridden by leading jockey Flavien Prat, Anonymity disputed the pace for the first half-mile before pulling clear to win by 4 1/4 lengths as the 1-2 favorite. Anonymity ran six furlongs in 1:10.17, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 93.

“She’s giving us a feeling that she’s pretty good,” he said. “So far, it’s turning out.”

Owned by Larry Roth, who races as LNJ Foxwoods, Anonymity was purchased for $600,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in September 2015. Anonymity won her debut at Del Mar last August but was turned out following a secondplace finish in an optional claimer here last October.

Mandella suggested on Sunday that Anonymity would start in another optional claimer before a stakes appearance.

◗ Trainers Mark Glatt and Gary Mandella have been fined $500 each for excessive levels of a muscle relaxant found in a runner, according to rulings published by the Santa Anita stewards.

Glatt was cited after Miss Ricochet tested in excess of the permitted level of dantrolene when fourth in a maiden race for California-bred fillies and mares as the 4-5 favorite on April 28. Miss Ricochet was beaten 3 3/4 lengths.

Mandella was fined after Cimpl Man tested in excess of the permitted level of methocarbamol in an optional claimer on the hillside turf course May 3. Cimpl Man finished third, beaten two lengths.
