Edwards, Matthews zoom to Late Model wins
Rookie Potter prevails in Super Truck race
Greg Edwards and Ryan Matthews drove to twin 50-lap Late Model feature victories Saturday night during Langley Speedway’s third weekly show of the season.
Edwards, a six-time points champion at the Hampton track, beat runner-up Mark Wertz by 1.067 seconds in a race that took just more than 14 minutes. It was his second triumph this year. Woody Howard placed third and Edwards’ brother Danny was fourth among 15 competitors.
In the encore, Matthews prevailed over Danny Edwards, Wertz and Greg Edwards.
Ryley Music, the Norfolk teen who earned top-three finishes in three divisions in their first races of the year, placed sixth and ninth, respectively.
In other races
Super Street: Dale Nichols, the runner-up in the April 6 opener and in last year’s standings, cruised to a 40-lap victory by 5.232 seconds over Jacob Wood. Sammy Gaita, last year’s points champ, took third in a 14-driver race that lasted just short of 13 minutes.
Super Truck: Rookie Elysia Potter achieved her first triumph, edging April 6 winner Chase McAdams by 369-thousandths of a second over 25 laps and just less than 25 minutes. Chris Bechtel was third, 2.189 seconds behind Potter, in the field of 11.
UCAR: Christian Keller gained his second 25-lap victory in as many tries this year, finishing 3.660 seconds ahead of secondplace Mikey Chinn over more than eight minutes of racing. Bill Eaker placed third among 11 starters.
Enduro: Alex Floroff, who won one race last year, made it 2 for 2 in 2024 by prevailing in a field of 17 drivers whose 30-lap race took about 14 ½ minutes. He won by 0.336 of a second over Ryan Vinson, who also was the runner-up in the opener.
Champ Kart: Ryan Hudgins, last year’s points champion, overcame opening-night winner
Jordan Valdes in a 20-lap thriller by a barely perceptible 75-thousandths of a second. Rookie Suya Saini placed third, just 0.336 of a second behind Hudgins in a race that took less than 11 ½ minutes. Saturday’s results in Hampton (car numbers). Late Model 50 #1: (15 starters); 1.
