Williams, Hyland power VCU past James Madison

RICHMOND — Vince Williams Jr. and Nah’Shon Hyland each scored 15 points as VCU held off James Madison on Tuesday.

VCU led by 13 points with

4:15 remaining, and Williams made 1 of 2 free throws with four seconds left for a four-point lead.

KeShawn Curry added 13 points and Adrian Baldwin Jr. had eight points and 10 assists for VCU (7-2), which won its fifth straight game.

Matt Lewis had 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for the Dukes (3-3).

Hofstra 76, Richmond 71

RICHMOND — Jalen Ray had 23 points as Hofstra edged Richmond.

Isaac Kante had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Hofstra (4-3).

Grant Golden had 15 points and five assists for the Spiders (6-2).

Liberty 108, Alcorn State 65

LYNCHBURG — Darius McGhee had 20 points and Liberty easily defeated Alcorn State.

Blake Preston had 16 points and nine rebounds for Liberty (8-3).

Liberty scored 57 first-half points, the most in a half since 2007.

East Carolina 68, Tulane 58

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Jayden Gardner had 21 points and 10 rebounds as East Carolina (7-1, 1-1 American) beat Tulane.

Boston College 78, Maine 62

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Jay Heath had 16 points, CJ Felder scored 11 of his 14 points in a big first half, and Boston College beat Maine to snap a four-game losing streak.

Boston College (2-5) bounced back from its worst home loss in Conte Forum history, losing 101-63 against Syracuse.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Corey Kispert scored 27 points as the Bulldogs won their home opener against the Demons (1-8) from Louisiana, who were to face them again Tuesday. Anton Watson scored 15 points for Gonzaga (5-0).

No. 2 Baylor 99, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42

WACO, Texas — Freshman guard LJ Cryer scored 15 points to lead five Bears in double figures, and Preseason AP All-American guard Jared Butler had 14 points and seven assists. The Bears (6-0) are the only Big 12 team left without a loss.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Victor Bailey scored 18 points and Tennessee (5-0) beat winless Saint Joseph’s (0-5). Bailey was one of six players who scored in double figures for the Volunteers.

No. 21 Florida State 72, Gardner-Webb 59

TALLAHASSE­E, Fla. — Anthony Polite had a career-high 15 points and Balsa Koprivica added a season-best 14 for FSU (5-1), which pulled away late.
