CNU extends win streak to seven

Christophe­r Newport (20-11) closed its regular season on a seven-match winning streak, sweeping York of Pennsylvan­ia 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-10) and Averett 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) at Freeman Center.

Against York, Mackenzie Wright had 10 kills, Sammy Carroll had 26 assists and four aces and Noelle Starr made 14 digs. Against Averett, Carroll had 33 assists and eight digs, while Alyssa Dozier and Maddie Carter had 10 kills apiece. CNU will play a C2C semifinal Friday in Fredericks­burg.

■ New York University (23-5) swept Virginia Wesleyan 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) in Baltimore. The Marlins fell to 20-6 despite Haley Sutton’s 21 assists.

■ Appalachia­n State (14-9, 7-5 Sun Belt) gained a split of its two-match series at Old Dominion, winning 3-1 (25-21, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13) Saturday despite Teresa Atilano’s 26 assists and 12 digs and Myah Conway’s 16 kills for the Monarchs (9-14, 4-6). In Friday’s series opener, Ashley Peroe had 13 kills and Atilano had 38 assists and five blocks as ODU won 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 26-24).

■ Colonial Athletic Associatio­n-leading Towson (21-1, 10-1) beat William & Mary 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19) in Maryland, though Eleanor Stothoff had 18 kills and Amy Schwem had 18 assists and five digs for the Tribe (11-8, 6-5).

■ Elon began a two-match series at Hampton (3-13, 0-13 CAA) by winning a four-setter Saturday.

■ MEAC-leading Coppin State (18-8, 9-1) denied Norfolk State’s upset bid, outlasting the Spartans 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-9) Friday at Gill Gymnasium. Carla Hernandez had 16 kills and 10 digs for the Spartans (5-14, 5-4), while Shonte Seale had 13 kills. Nicole Rodriguez had 14 digs, and freshman Sydney McCree had 36 assists, including her 500th this season.
