GEORGETOWN, DEL. >> The Brandywine Valley SPCA announced Monday that the weekend’s Mega Adoption Event resulted in 1181 adoptions. The event held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds brought in families from across the tri-state area who adopted a total of 716 dogs and 465 cats.

This is the fifth Mega Adoption Event held by the BVSPCA, and it had the highest number of adoptions of any of the Mega events so far. Adopted animals ranged from puppies and kittens to seniors and long-time shelter residents, including one senior dog that had been at the shelter for 358 days.

Just one dog and 11 cats remained at the end of the event. The BVSPCA holds this event twice a year, one in June and one in December, and this is the fourth in a row to place more than 1000 animals.

“It was really inspiring to see so many families come out to give these great pets a second chance,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA Chief Executive Officer. “We’re already getting updates from families about how much they love their new cat or dog. That’s the hope and dream that motivates our staff and volunteers every day, and especially on the most difficult days.”

The BVSPCA hosts the event and brings all of the animals from its four adoption locations, with the exception of a few that might find the event venue overwhelming. In addition, eight shelter partners participated in this weekend’s event, including Animal Rescue League of Berks County, BARCS (Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Center), Crossing Paths Animal Rescue, Currituck County Animal Shelter, Delaware Humane Association (DHA), Faithful Friends, Northeastern North Carolina SPCA, and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center.

The Mega Adoption Event was supported in part by the Petco Foundation and Discover. Donations from the community to support such lifesaving initiatives can be made at bvspca.org/donate.

Founded in 1929, the Brandywine Valley SPCA is the first open admission no-kill shelter in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 2017, the BVSPCA cared for more than 14,000 stray, owner-surrendered, wayward owned, and abused and neglected animals while achieving a 96% live release rate.
