Coatesville high school officials host event for district parents
CALN » Parents had the opportunity to see what their children will be doing in high school this year.
Back to School night is traditionally a time for families to meet the teachers, hear about their students’ classes and review course expectations for each subject area. This year, the Coatesville Area Senior High School Campus offered a much more interactive evening that felt like a celebration and gave parents a window into what a school day is like for their child.
“We wanted to make back-toschool night a celebration for our high school families,” said Coatesville Area Senior High Principal Michele Snyder.
Food trucks welcomed visitors to the event with barbecue, Jamaican food, water ice, and ice cream. Booster Clubs offered pizza and pretzels for parents and students alike. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to visit more than 30 extracurricular activity tables sponsored by teachers and coaches. An official welcome began as the band played “the Star Spangled Banner” and Coatesville’s Alma Mater while the AFJROTC posted the colors.
“I wanted it to be a community event, where everyone could see all of the wonderful activities and programs that the campus has to offer,” Snyder said. “Most importantly, I wanted it to be a big event that was different from what was done in the past. It was an opportunity to welcome new families, socialize with our returning families and spread Coatesville pride.”
Upon reaching first period, parents and guardians were greeted by teachers who instructed them in a five-minute mini-lesson that illustrated what students would experience in their classroom. Parents were able to ask questions of each teacher, and they had a chance to see displays of student art, acting, and music throughout the building.
The event drew about 500 people, and students, staff. Parents told school officials that they enjoyed the change in format.
