Death probed as homicide
Police were called to area near traffic circle Sunday night
The death of a man next to the roundabout on Sunday is being investigated as a homicide, Ulster County Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Kavanagh said Monday.
Kavanagh said as of 3 p.m. Monday that authorities did not have a suspect in custody.
Kavanagh said the investigation is still in its early stage, and, due to the “sensitive nature” of the investigation, he could not offer further details.
Town of Ulster Police have been investigating the death of the man Sunday evening near the traffic circle, according to town of Ulster Police Chief Kyle S. Berardi.
Berardi said there’s no rea
son to believe there is any threat to public safety. He added that the identity of the victim was being withheld Monday afternoon, pending notification of family members. He declined to say what caused the man’s death.
Berardi said authorities were called to the Washington Avenue side of the traffic circle around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Late Monday morning, more than a dozen police vehicles from the Ulster Town Police Department, state police and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office were parked on a pedestrian path that links state Route 28 to Washington Avenue.
Officers and detectives combed a weeded area next to a construction site for a new plaza that was cordoned off with police tape.
A sheriff’s K9 could be heard barking and an evidence glove could be seen in the grass next to the pedestrian path.
State troopers on the scene were keeping pedestrians off the path and referred all questions to Berardi.
Berardi said police expect to release more details later.
