Senior groups list meeting schedules

The Woodstock Senior Citizens Club will meet Wednesday, June 20, at noon at the Community Center, Rock City Road.

The speaker will be an officer from the Woodstock Police Department talking about safety and emergency issues. There will also be an ice cream social.

There will be no meeting on Wednesday, July 4.

AARP driver safety classes scheduled

The following AARP driversafe­ty classes have been scheduled:

• Saturday, July 14, at the Russell Brott Senior Center, 1 Town Hall Drive, Lake Katrine. Sign in at 8:30 a.m. The class will start at 9 a.m.

• Saturday, July 28, at the Russell Brott Senior Center, 1 Town Hall Drive, Lake Katrine. Sign in at 8:30 a.m. The Class will start at 9 a.m.

The classes are scheduled to run six hours, but could last longer.

Successful completion of the course qualifies attendees for insurance discounts and the reduction of points on their driver’s licenses. The cost is $25 per person, $20 for AARP members.

There are no membership or age requiremen­ts. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Seating is limited, and preregistr­ation is required. To register, call (845) 3397885 Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Breakfast seminar on June 20 at Hudson Valley Mall

The Wellness and Healthy Life Style Senior Breakfast Seminar will meet Wednesday, June 20, in the food court of the Hudson Valley Mall, 1300 Ulster Ave.

Breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m., with the speaker at 9 a.m. The speaker will be Richard Burzine, a neurology hospitalis­t. He will talk about neurologic­al conditions in senior citizens.

Thirty-three students from Ellenville High School’s Class of 2019 were inducted into the National Honor Society during a ceremony on May 24.

The number of inductees was nearly double of last year’s total. The school has been inducting students into the society since 1946.

National Honor Society Advisor Jennifer Schoonmake­r said in a press release that induction of students is based on a group recommenda­tion of the Faculty Council.

“Inducted students must meet the stringent standards set forth by NHS and must also be exemplary in the areas of service, leadership, character, and scholarshi­p,” she said.

Schoonmake­r added that society members sponsored a “Coffee House Night” of live performanc­e art this year, raising money for the Holiday Helping Hands program. The program buys gifts for those in need in Ellenville. The group also conducted a flower sale to raise funds for Hurricane Maria recovery efforts in Puerto Rico. In addition, society members helped out during parent/teacher nights and open houses, guiding guests around the building as needed.

The inducted students included Cora Aragon, Rageena Chander, Madison Corvinus, Hailey Damms, Andrew Dawson, John Doros, Megan Eckert, Tiler Ferentheil, Katherine Flores, Elaina Garritt, Hadassah Graham, Kyle Guiney, Gregory Guzman, Roman Hrynovets, Joshua Jacobs, Jason Lonstein and Vanelys Malave. Also inducted were Jonathan McCombs, Jonathan Oquendo, Benjamin Pidel, Caleb Quick, Isabella Ramirez, Nick Rekuc, Cassandra Reyes, Ashlyn Rivera, Megan Ryan, Bianca Sorbara, Kathleen Spoto, Colleen Stevens, Marissa Storey, John Unverzagt, Mia Unverzagt and Erma-Lee Williams. Patrick Goetz of Kerhonkson graduated from Becker College in Worcester, Mass., on May 5, with a bachelor of arts degree in interactiv­e media design.

••• Two area residents — Nile Abularrage of Stone Ridge and Kenny Ling of Highland — graduated from Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, Mass., on May 20, with undergradu­ate degrees.

Abularrage graduated, magna cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in biochemist­ry. Ling graduated, cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineerin­g.

••• Brian T. Loughlin of Kingston graduated May 13from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., with a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and elementary education. ••• a student at Frostburg State University in Maryland, was inducted May 19 into the first class at the university of Phi Kappa Phi, the oldest all-discipline collegiate honor society.

Membership to Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only. The top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students were invited for membership.

••• Marissa Downes of Boicesvill­e, a student at Hartwick College in Oneonta, was named to the 2017 Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Associatio­n Division III National Academic Squad.

The squad recognizes student-athletes who achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or high through the first semester of the 2017-19 academic year.

A senior on the Hartwick field hockey team, Downes was also named to the Empire 8 Athletic Conference All-Sportsmans­hip Team.

She is the daughter of Debbie and Donald Downes of Boiceville.

••• Mason Rothe of Saugerties was named to the provost’s list at Hofstra University in Hempstead for the spring semester.

Students earn president’s list status by achieving a 4.0 grade point average.
