YOUTH ON THE GO
Thirty-three Ulster BOCES students were recognized for academic achievement, commitment and exemplifying exceptional qualities such as honesty, leadership, responsibility and good character when they were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society on May 8.
The students, who represented the Kingston, Highland, New Paltz, Onteora, Rondout Valley, Saugerties and Wallkill school districts, are enrolled in various trade programs offered at Ulster BOCES.
The society’s purpose is to reward scholastic achievement in occupational and/or technical education; to promote ideals of honesty, service, leadership, and skill development among America’s workforce; and to encourage the practice of high standards of personal and professional conduct and individual responsibility. To qualify for membership into the society, students must maintain an average of 90 percent or above, have excellent attendance and exhibit good citizenship.
The inductees were as follows:
• Kingston School District — Gabrielle Nicole Ashdown, early childhood/educational studies. Dylan Berryann, HVAC. Makayla Thorpe, health occupations exploration program.
• Saugerties Central School District — Niki Bach, health occupations exploration program; Karley Cooper, early childhood/educational studies. Emily Ingrassia, health occupations exploration program.Michael Rizzo, culinary arts.
• Onteora Central School District — Kaiah Boyd, criminal justice. Oscar Giron, culinary arts. Kayleigh Robinson, health occupations exploration program. Angela VanLeuvan, culinary arts.
• Rondout Valley Central School District — Deana Casal, health occupations exploration program. Kendra Lake, health occupations exploration program. Isabelle Rice, fashion design. Maria Tanjila, health occupations exploration program. Aaliah Williams, WEB-based entrepreneurship and business.
• New Paltz Central School District — Priscilla Andaluz, criminal justice. Jelenia Conde, criminal justice. Giulia Danisi, fashion design. Brett Fischer, custom robotics design and manufacturing. David McAlister, criminal justice. Kayleigh Rivers, health occupations exploration program. Gregory Smith, culinary arts. Cassidy Thacker, health occupations exploration program. Annelise Willis, criminal justice.
• Highland Central School District — Shannon Greene, criminal justice. Cesar Luna, Cisco. Ryan Shepard, Cisco. Matthew Sutcliffe, health occupations exploration. Shawn VanNorstrand, Cisco.
• Wallill Central School District — Austin Conover, Cisco. Jaela Fernandez, criminal justice. Drilon Osaj, custom robotics design and manufacturing. William Fitzmaurice was named the valedictorian of the Catskill High School Class of 2018. Arley Liberti was named the class salutatorian.
During his senior year, Fitzmaurice attended the New Visions Medical Program at Questar III. While in high school, he played varsity soccer, basketball and baseball and was co-captain of the soccer team and captain of the baseball team.
Fitzmaurice was a percussionist in the band until ninth grade. He was president of the Catskill Interact Club, vice president of his class and treasurer of the National Honor Society. He has volunteered with the Catskill Soccer Club and Catskill Little League, and is a certified soccer referee. He also helped at the Hunter Trauma Center.
He plans to attend Siena College in Loudonville, where he will major in biology. His future plans are to attend medical school and is currently working for Big Top Tent Rentals in Cairo.
He is the son of Lisa and William Fitzmaurice of Catskill.
While in high school, Liberti participated in band. She was a member of the Span-
ish Club, Interact Club, Scrub Club and National Honor Society. She played varsity soccer all four years and softball for three.
Liberti was class president all four years and participated in Santa’s Helpers. She was active in her community by volunteering at Matthew 25Food
Pantry, as well as local JDRF and Hemophilia Walks.
While in high school, Arley worked part time for Hunter Mountain and the Town of Catskill. In addition, she worked part time for Hunter Mountain and the Town of Catskill.
Liberti plans to attend Boston College, where she will major in nursing, in the fall.
She is the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Liberti of Catskill.
Two members of Columbia and Greene Counties 4-H — Calvin Keller and Vidar Pirrone — were part of the Capital District Region tams that competed in the State Senior and Junior Dairy Bowl on April 28 at Cornell University in Ithaca.
Calvin Keller was a member of the Capital District Region Junior 4-H Dairy Bowl team that finished first. Keller came in third place in the individual
competition.
Pirrone was a member of the Capital District Region Senior 4-H Dairy Bowl team that finished second. Pirrone finished in seventh place in the individual competition.
This year’s coaches for the Columbia and Greene Counties’ Dairy Bowl program were Roy Denniston for the senior team, Ashlynn and Roberta Keller for the novice team and Meghan Charron and Nathan Chittenden for the junior team.
