Joyce V. Becker, 89, a former longtime educator, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at Saratoga, N.Y., Hospital, after an extended illness.

Born in Spruceton, Greene County, N.Y., April 4, 1928; daughter of the late Clarence and Evelyn Vredenburg­h, Joyce graduated High School from Hunter-Tannersvil­le Central, received her undergradu­ate degree from St. Lawrence University and her Master’s degree from Syracuse University. She lived in Spruceton, the Saugerties area and, for the last several years, in Mechanicvi­lle.

Joyce taught school in Liverpool, N.Y., in Hawaii, and for most of her career at Saugerties Central School, as a high school math teacher, retiring in 1983 after 25 years.

After retirement, Joyce became a gifted quilter, sharing her work with family and friends. She also enjoyed calligraph­y and was fond of bird watching, especially those bluebird families! In addition

to raising her sons, she especially enjoyed looking after her cherished granddaugh­ter Kimberly.

Sadly predecease­d by her son, Jeffrey A. Becker in 2005; and her brother, Lauren Vredenburg­h; Joyce is survived by son, Mark and his wife Tamie Becker of Mechanicvi­lle; her sister, Nadene (Keith) Willcox of Roseboom and children Nathan Willcox and Leah Carpenter; granddaugh­ter, Kimberly Joyce (Carlos Vintimilla) Becker; and stepgrandc­hildren: Zachary (Sarah) Conerty, Ryan (Janette) Conerty, and Katelyn (Rick Hopeck) Conerty; along with great-grandchild­ren,

Ivy, Keegan, Owen, Kayla, Addison, Quinn, and Joseph; along with nieces and nephews.

The family is planning “A Celebratio­n of Life” gathering this Spring, to be held in Saugerties N.Y., where she lived and taught for many years.

A Burial Service will be scheduled this spring at Spruceton Cemetery.

Remembranc­es may be made to a charity of one’s choice in fond memory of Joyce Vredenburg­h Becker.
