City council set to OK sale of 19 properties
Aldermen have moved a step closer to approving the sale of city properties that were offered at auction.
KINGSTON, N.Y. » Aldermen have moved a step closer to approving the sale of 19 city-owned properties that were offered at auction in mid-November.
During a special meeting of the Common Council’s Finance and Audit Committee on Wednesday, aldermen unanimously adopted a resolution approving the sale of the properties to 14 individual buyers.
The resolution will be presented to the full council, which is next scheduled
to meet on Dec. 5.
There were 25 cityowned properties offered for auction, but six of the properties drew no bids. Of the properties offered, eight have structures on them, while the remainder are vacant.
The auction, in the Common Council chamber at City Hall on Nov. 14, generated high bids totaling $821,214.76. In all, $567,969.69 in unpaid taxes was owed on the 25 foreclosed properties.
“It turned out to be a day that provided better-than-expected results,” said city Corporation Counsel Kevin Bryant. He said there were no issues with the winners of the properties, though there was one property on which a former owner had another person bid in an attempt to win back the parcel. That bid was taken away, Bryant said.
Bryant also said there was one property on which the bid was deemed to be too low and the parcel was put back up for auction. He said it turned out to be a win-win for the city.
Among the properties purchased at auction was a detached row building with garage and one apartment at 693 Broadway sold to Kristin Thorne for $190,000, an attached row building at 458 Broadway sold to Lillian Nazgihw for $167,000, and a two-family house at 20 Boulder Ave. sold to Steven James Cline for $97,000. The other bid amounts for the commercial and multifamily residential properties ranged from $32,664 to $92,000, while the vacant properties sold for between $1,000 and $10,250 each.
