Five local high school football teams seek berths in sectional title games in semifinal action today and Saturday.

KINGSTON, N.Y. » A big first half by JaVar Tinsley powered Kingston High to a season-ending 32-7 football victory over Rondout Valley at Dietz Stadium on Thursday.

Tinsley, a senior playing his final game, rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Tigers built a 26-0 halftime advantage. He finished with 214 yards on 20 carries.

Matt Amato also carried for 100 yards and a TD as Kingston rushed for 372 yards total.

“It was a good time being out there with my teammates for my last season and I just enjoyed every moment of it,” said Tinsley, who became the first Tiger to rush

for more than 200 yards in nine years. (Sean Fontanes did it twice in 2008.) Tinsley became only the 12th individual to reach the 200yard plateau.

“They (the offensive line) came through a lot tonight,” he said. “The linemen were doing their jobs. They were pulling and I was getting around the blocks. It helped a lot.”

The Tigers closed out a 2-7 campaign with a second straight victory.

“It feels great. We just got to keep the streak going,” Tinsley added. “Tiger pride!”

Isayah Wells’ 50-yard fumble return set up Tinsley’s first TD, a 4-yard burst up the middle midway through the first quarter. He raced 44 yards for his second score before the period ended.

Chapman Parker’s 17yard run off a third-down Statue of Liberty play set up Tinsley’s 18-yard TD to start the second quarter. Parker later made it 26-0 on a 23-yard pass to Daivel Jackson.

Amato’s 39-yard run capped Kingston’s scoring late in the third. Rondout got on the board when Ben Hikade rolled right and threw a 31-yard strike to Spencer Sands on the second play of the fourth.

Hikade completed 12of-30 passes for 114 yards for (2-7) Rondout. Tyquan Watson and Collin Ford both intercepted Hikade. A defensive holding penalty nullified another pick by Watson.

Nikita Orcea had an interception and blocked an extra point, Hikade recovered a fumble and AJ Parete also had an pick to lead the Ganders’ defense.

Kingston coach Quintin Johnson was happy with the final showing and the strides the team has made over the season.

“Every game was a fight for us, but we went into the fourth quarter with an opportunity to come out with the win,” he said. “These guys did everything I could ask for of them to do. It certainly was never perfect, at times it was really bad, but they kept coming back, they kept fighting and that’s all we can ask of them to do.

“Wins aside, losses aside, we came in every day,” Johnson said, “and we challenged the kids to get better and do what we asked them to do and they kept answering the call.”
