Ex-con sought in village shooting
A convicted felon known to frequent Ulster, Greene, Columbia and Albany counties is being sought for attempted murder after a shooting in the village of Catskill and is considered “armed and dangerous,” the village police chief said Tuesday.
Paul “Pablo” Maldonado, 38, lives in the Leeds section of Catskill, has ties to the New York City area and might be driving a white 2014 Lincoln MKZ with New York license plate HEV-3606, according to a police press release.
Maldonado also is wanted for the felony of criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
Catskill Police Chief David Darling said Maldonado is believed to have shot a man once in the leg at 1:30 a.m. Monday in a parking lot next to the bar Captain Kidds Inn at 251 W. Main St. in the village. Darling said the man was running toward the bar attempting to avoid a confrontation with Maldonado.
Darling did not identify the man but said he is an acquaintance of Maldonado’s.
The chief said the man was fair condition Tuesday at Albany Medical Center. He said the bullet passed through the man’s leg.
Darling said police agencies in Ulster, Greene, Columbia and Albany counties and within a 30-mile radius of Catskill have been notified of the shooting and that police also were pursuing leads in New York City.
Anyone who might encounter Maldonado is advised not to approach him and to call 911, Darling said.
Darling said Maldonado was sentenced in March 1999 to five years of probation after being convicted in Greene County for the felony of criminal possession of a controlled substance. A mugshot of Maldonado provided by police on Tuesday was taken this year, Darling said, but he did not know for what alleged crime,
