The Woodland Joint Unified School District held its annual Reclassification, Pathway and State Seal of Biliteracy Ceremony earlier this week at the Woodland High School stadium located on the campus at 21 North West St.

During the Monday evening ceremony, the WJUSD awarded 232 students who were English Learners and who have now demonstrated English competency, resulting in their reclassification as fluent English speakers, with a certificate of accomplishment and a medal.

Also, for the first time, WJUSD recognized 121 students who are on a pathway to biliteracy.

These students have demonstrated progress toward proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish and English. Current eight grade students also joined the ceremony and received certificates and medals.

WJUSD also awarded 106 State Seal of Biliteracy awards to seniors for their linguistic accomplishments, acknowledging their oral and written competency in at least two languages. This year's languages include Spanish, French, Mandarin, Filipino, Italian, and American Sign Language, with one student earning a double seal in Italian and Spanish.

“It definitely proves that I've been on a journey studying another language, which is not easy,” said Flavio Lauria, a senior at Woodland High School. “It's official. It makes me feel glad that I learned a second language, and I encourage anyone to do it, too.”

Additionally, the State Seal of Biliteracy recipients were honored with a medal and a sash, commemorating their academic achievement. They will receive a state seal on their high school diploma and a transcript notation.

“It means that I'm recognized as someone who speaks Spanish, and I'm able to carry that for the rest of my life,” said Tobias Rocha, a senior at Pioneer High School. “Ever since I was little, Spanish was my first language, so this is like closing the chapter of learning Spanish, and finally now I'm recognized. It just feels like a big recognition for all the work I've done here.”
