- Democrat staff

The Woodland Community Services Department has announced it is offering a summer of limited swim lessons.

Krista Bain of the department said the two week, and eight-day sessions start on July 20 with classes beginning as early at 8:15 a.m.

This year lessons will be structured a little differently than usual, stated Bain.

For the Tadpole, Goldfish, and Sea Horse levels (children 6 and under), instructors will lead adults and their children through water acclimation and stroke progression.

Within the Swordfish, Dolphin, and Shark levels (children 7 and up), participants will learn stroke development and refinement as instructors teach from the deck, adult assistance is not required. To register for swim lessons this summer, go to www. cityofwoodland.org/CSD or contact 661-2000.

Here are some questions and answers people may have about the lessons:

Q

: What precautions are you taking to reduce illness and exposure? A : We have greatly reduced class sizes and participation of swim lessons. In addition, instructors will not be

teaching in the standard fashion while in the water. The pool facility and high contact points will be regularly sanitized.

Q : Does COVID-19 live in pool water?

A : According to the CDC, “There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of recreational waters. Follow safe swimming practices, along with social distancing and everyday preventative actions to protect yourself.”

Q : Will you add more chlorine to the pool to help kill COVID-19?

A : Our pool is maintained by a Certified Pool Operator who checks and balances the pool chemistry each day to ensure our pool is within the required levels for public bathing. Over-chlorination of the pool will not kill the virus and will interrupt the pH balance of the pool water.

Q : Will my child be required to wear a mask during swim lessons?

A : Participants will be required to wear face coverings upon entry into the facility. However, it may be removed before entering the pool. Spectators of lessons should keep face coverings on while inside the facility.

Q

: Why does my child have to have an adult with them to participate in lessons? A : In order to achieve social distance requirements, we are asking every family to provide a family member to work with each child participant of the tadpole, goldfish, and sea horse classes. At no time will a member of the swim instruction staff work one on one with swim lesson participant within the water.

Q

: How will I teach my child to swim? A : Our instructors are trained to work with adults and their children to guide them in learning the swimming progression. At no time will an adult not be able to stand in the area of the pool where the class is held.

Q : Why are the locker/ changing rooms not available?

A : From the guidance of Yolo County, the locker/changing rooms are closed and not available. There are restrooms available to use located near the small pool. Swim lesson participants must arrive dressed in swimsuit attire and ready to swim.

Q : Why don’t you have very many swim lesson spots available?

A : We have greatly reduced the number of participants for swimming lessons in order to comply with the county’s guidelines for safely operating a public pool facility. We have made as many spots available as we feel we can safely accommodate the public.
