John Valentino Susi
John Valentino Susi of Ansonia, CT, passed away on September 26th, 2022 at the age of 82 from a long battle with cardiovascular disease.
He was born on September 8th, 1940 in Bridgeport, CT. He graduated Central High School in 1959. After which, he began his studies to become a helicopter mechanic.
John, also known as Pops, Dad, Poppi, Nonno and the Godfather, was blessed with a large and loving family. He met his wife to be, Concetta, through correspondence with his cousin. They met briefly in Sicily and knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They married on July 31st, 1965. Their loving marriage lasted 57 years blessing them with three wonderful daughters, seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He loved his grandchildren and frequently attended their sports and musical performances. They brought him so much joy and happiness.
John eventually became a helicopter mechanic, supervisor and foreman for Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT for 36 years. He loved automobiles, especially antique car shows. In his spare time, he purchased an old beat up Alfa Romeo and brought it back to life. John loved his Italian opera singers…. Pavarotti, Bocelli, and Il Volo. He also loved the Beatles and Barbara Streisand.
John and Concetta loved hosting many family picnics and birthday celebrations. He especially loved when his Sicilian wife cooked her many specialties. He was a member of the Ansonia Gun Club and the NRA. He enjoyed watching auto racing, the Jets and Patriots football, and loved to watch tennis. He loved to make his own wine and beer. He was an avid gardener.
John was predeceased by his father, Valentino Susi and mother, Marion Laiacona. He is survived by his wife, Concetta; his daughters Suzanne O’Hara (husband John), Deborah Distefano (husband Raffaello) and Brenda Mierzejewski (husband David); his seven grandchildren Christina, Dylan, Marco, Gabriella, Isabella, Leana, and Brady; his two great-grandchildren Cara and Michael; his sister Josephine Susi.
Visitation and a memorial service will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 4-7 p.m., at Dennis & D’Arcy - Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Home, 2611 Main Street, Stratford, CT. Flowers can be sent to Dennis & D’Arcy – Abriola & Kelemen; addressed to the Susi Family. Funeral services will also be at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Saturday October 1st with burial following at Mount Saint Peter Cemetery in Derby, CT.
