John E. Spyrou
On Saturday afternoon, October 6, 2018, John Emmanuel Spyrou departed this life for the next. He was 52 years old. Born in Athens, Greece on February 5, 1966 to Emmanuel Spyrou and Eleni Tzanetakis Spyrou, John and his family immigrated to Connecticut in the early 70s, where he continued to reside throughout his life.
John had a photographic memory and was an avid reader, car enthusiast, history buff, sports fanatic, and a gifted drummer. He was a lover of anything chocolate, though his favorite food was tiropita… especially the kind you could get off of a street vendor in the middle of Athens, from a bakery in Astoria, or from his sister’s mother-in-law. Some of the most favorite and cherished moments in John’s life included Sunday afternoon rides to Stew Leonard’s as a child, listening to Glenn Miller on a scratchy old radio in the kitchen of his childhood home, getting his first KISS album for Christmas, riding in the backseat of his Dad’s Chevy Nova all the way to Canada, and playing drums with his band “back in the day.” John was an incredible fighter. His battle was long, and though he endured much, his strength and courage were unparalleled. He played every hand he was dealt with iron will and bravery, and did not go down for the count until he was good and ready. Now, his burdens lifted, he walks on clouds in the company of those he loved who went before him, including his Dad, Emmanuel, and his brother-inlaw, George.
John was a firstborn son, a big brother, a father, and an uncle. He leaves behind his four “loves,” who include his devoted and loving mother and caregiver, Eleni Spyrou, his “little” sister, Vicky SpyrouAndriotis, his beloved daughter, Ashley Spyrou, and “the boy,” his nephew, Emmanuel Andriotis. John also leaves behind his childhood friend, Robert Somley of Monroe, his uncle Kostaki and his family, his Godfather and uncle Meme and his family, his Godmother and aunt Maria and her family, all of Greece. The family would like to express their gratitude to Fani Takos, “Theia” Eleftheria, his nurse, Sue at Saint Vincent’s, and all the ladies of Vitas Healthcare and Saint Joseph’s Manor who so compassionately and caringly attended to John’s needs, as well as ours.
