MIDWEST FISHING REPORT

-

LAKEFRONT PERCH: From shore, best at Navy Pier or Steelworkers Park; from boat, the Calumet River and Cal Harbor.

PASSES: Select Chicago harbors — Montrose, Belmont, Diversey, DuSable, Burnham and Jackson — open Thursday to fishermen with a pier pass ($6). Parking passes ($10 for two months) are for the DuSable and Burnham fishermen’s lots. Passes are or will be available at Henry’s Sports and Bait and at Northerly Island.

ICE FISHING: Kurt’s Island Sport Shop: A few trying on thin ice. Shop pond froze Friday, which usually means Lake Minocqua locks up in seven to 10 days.

AREA LAKES: Some shell ice, but it will

disappear.

AREA RIVERS: DES PLAINES: Tim Baker: Water cooled through 40s. Even with cool water, try fast baits such as inline spinners, especially No. 3 or No. 4 Mepps Aglia. FOX: Pete Lamar: Very clear, normal fall depth.

KANKAKEE: Kyle Lund: Levels near perfect. Water in upper 30s, will warm into 40s. Smallmouth slowed (focus on deeper pools). Some good walleye (Lund, 23.75 inches; Nick Scheppler, 28.5 inches); best at sunset. Bite should hold through Thanksgiving.

CHAIN O’LAKES: Triangle: Some open-water fishing. Focus on main-lake points toward deeper water for walleye (moving up evenings) and crappie on fatheads. Muskie are fair; best on suckers.

DELAVAN: Tim Baker: His reports indicate tougher bite. Look in first-ice areas with live bait.

LAKEFRONT: Perch at top. A few steelhead and lakers around, too. SNAGGING: Snagging for Chinook and coho is permitted only at Jackson Harbor (inner and outer), the Lincoln Park Lagoon south of Fullerton, the north basin of Waukegan Harbor and the Winnetka power plant.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Perch at top. Slez’s: When weather allows, good lakers around reef area out of Portage on bladebaits or crankbaits. Winter steelhead in tributaries should keep improving on Voodoo jigs tipped with waxies.

ST. JOSEPH, MICHIGAN: Tackle Haven: Steelhead can be found from mid-river to Berrien Springs. A few whitefish off the pier when weather allows.

SHABBONA: Lakeside is closed. Boat rental in November is by appointment. Park hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
