Bills QB Allen out at least 2 or 3 games
Multiple outlets Tuesday reported Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen has a sprained ligament in his right (throwing) elbow and will miss at least two or three games.
NFL.com reported orthopedic specialist James Andrews said Allen won’t require surgery on his ulnar collateral ligament, the one on which baseball pitchers often have Tommy John surgery.
The Bills haven’t confirmed the nature of the injury. Coach Sean McDermott on Monday only would list Allen as week-to-week. He is scheduled to address reporters again after practice Wednesday.
Allen’s injury, which he suffered in the third quarter Sunday against the Texans, leaves the Bills with a choice of starting turnover-prone Nathan Peterman or newly signed veteran Derek Anderson against the Colts.
Falcons put RB Freeman on IR
The Falcons put running back Devonta Freeman on injured reserve with a groin injury, but they hope he will be able to return at some point this season.
The Falcons initially didn’t think the injury was serious, but the soreness persisted. Further tests showed Freeman needs a surgical procedure that will keep him out several weeks.
Raiders release LB Johnson
Raiders coach Jon Gruden said the team released middle linebacker Derrick Johnson, whom they signed to a free-agent contract in May to be their starter. Gruden said linebacker Jason Cabinda will be promoted from the practice squad to take Johnson’s spot on the roster.
49ers add quarterback depth
The 49ers signed quarterback Tom Savage to a one-year contract to add depth behind C.J. Beathard. The team had been looking for help at the position since Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a season-ending knee injury last month and Beathard replaced him as the starter.
