Ruth Caruthers

Ruth Peyton Caruthers, 97, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023 from heart complications. She was the daughter of the late Ernest and Dorcas Peyton of Sewanee, Tennessee. In 1945, while a nursing student at Baroness Erlanger Hospital, she met and married Luther J. Caruthers, who passed away in 1976. She worked for Dr. David Karr for 10 years and then returned to Erlanger where she remained for the next 30 years of her nursing career until her retirement in 1986.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters: Margaret Pauline Ovington, Ernestine Hawkins, Mary Jean Diehl, Virginia Peyton and Patty Hastings as well as two sisters, Charlotte and Evelyn Louise and a brother, Charles who died as children. Her son, Luther J. “Jim” Caruthers Jr., son-in-law, Kenneth Boyd and her granddaughter, Lori Boyd Hudson also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her brother, David Peyton of Houston, TX; daughter, Linda Boyd of Red Bank, TN; daughter-inlaw, Lynn Dekle Caruthers of Knoxville, TN; grandson, Corbin Caruthers (Lindsay) of Franklin, TN; granddaughter, Peyton Drysdale (James) of Knoxville, TN; great-grandchildren Quinn, Duncan and Clara Drysdale and Landrix and Lochxland Caruthers; many nieces and nephews; two cousins, Ruth Green of Cowan, TN and Lucille Terrill of Monteagle, TN; and her cat, Truffle.

Burial will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in Forest Hills Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorial gifts may be made to the Pet Placement Center, 5975 Dayton Blvd, Chattanooga, TN 37415 or a charity of your choice.
