Captain Tiger puts himself on squad

- WIRE REPORTS

Tiger Woods will have an earpiece, a radio and his golf clubs at the Presidents Cup. Woods created his own slice of history Thursday night by becoming the first Presidents Cup captain to use one of his wild-card selections on himself. He is the second playing captain in the Presidents Cup. Hale Irwin played in the inaugural matches in 1994 when he qualified for the Americans. Woods was introduced as U.S. captain in March 2018, when he was just returning from a fourth surgery on his lower back. He has three victories since then, including his 15th major title when he won the Masters in April, so the decision was hardly a surprise. The Americans will take on the International (minus Europe) lineup Dec. 12-15 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Woods also selected

Tony Finau, who finished just outside the top eight who qualified; U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland, who is playing on his first U.S. team; and Patrick Reed. Missing from the American team is Phil Mickelson, who had played in every Presidents Cup since the matches began in 1994.

› PHOENIX — Jeff Maggert used a hot new putter to take the first-round lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, and

Retief Goosen, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie made moves to catch Scott McCarron in the PGA Tour Champions’ season standings. Maggert shot an 8-under 63 on Thursday in perfect conditions at Phoenix Country Club to take a one-stroke lead over Langer, with Steve Flesch, Paul Goydos and Miguel Angel Jimenez another shot back and Goosen and Kelly at 66 with Lee Janzen and Scott Parel. Maggert entered the season finale 34th in the standings, three spots from failing to qualify. McCarron, the points leader the past 20 weeks, was tied for 22nd in the 34-man field after a 69. Kelly needs a victory or help from McCarron to take the season title. Langer is third in the standings, putting the 62-year-old German star in position to win his sixth Charles Schwab Cup title — with help from Kelly and McCarron. Montgomerie, fourth in the standings, had a 67. Goosen, at fifth in the standings, is the last player with a chance to take the season title with a victory.

› ANTALYA, Turkey — England’s Tom Lewis and Austria’s Matthias Schwab shared a one-shot lead after each shot a 7-under 65 Thursday in the first round of the Turkish Airlines Open. Tied for second were the United States’ David Lipsky, Sweden’s Alex Noren and Germany’s Thomas Pieters.

› NASHVILLE — Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said Deuce Wallace will start at quarterback Saturday as the Commodores (2-6, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) visit No. 10 Florida (7-2, 4-2). Mason said Thursday on WGFX-FM 104.5 The Zone that Wallace will make the first start of his Vanderbilt career and redshirt freshman Allan Walters will back up Wallace. Mason said Riley Neal remains in the concussion protocol after being knocked out of last week’s loss at South Carolina but will travel with the Commodores. Wallace has played in six games this season. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound redshirt junior is 33-of-76 passing for 237 yards with three interceptions and no touchdown passes, though he did throw one in 2017. Walters has yet to take a snap in a college game.
